tooru doesn’t know how to care about people. that was always — always — hajime’s job, despite the robust corners to his words. tooru smiled and no one believed him, and hajime glared and people trusted him. it began, after a while, to feel a little bit like the natural order of things.
tooru snapped in two because he was bored or out of ideas or losing his balance, and no one batted an eye because it worked — because they won the point or the set or the match and his grades stayed even and they were going to get to nationals this year, they were, until they weren’t and he’s long been past cracked in half and hajime is in a different world — and tooru is supposed to know how to handle this by now.

he’s half-convinced his brain is tricking him, that he’s delusional from, like, gym-borne toxic fumes or something, but a quick glance at kiyoomi’s phone screen discounts that theory. huh. and, again: what?
atsumu fights the urge to rip the earbud out of kiyoomi’s ear or pause the music or, like, screech. normal responses, surely. instead, he speaks as calmly as possible around the disbelief in his voice, “you listen to abba?!”

they stared at each other, wordless, because they may have loved each other so quietly and constantly that it didn’t need to be verbalized, but they wouldn’t be them — wouldn’t be kiyoomi and atsumu — if they weren’t each at least somewhat enamored with their own pride. there was a stupidity to it that made kiyoomi’s next words all the more damning:
“where are you going?”
