Book IV
Shisui had always been asked to reach higher than he was able or more accurately than he wanted to. The dreams he had dreamt in his youth were replaced by the single wish to become — or at least appear — ordinary; after all, he didn't want to attract attention, for the world takes as much as it gives, and then demands some more.
And so he kept selling a lie. Even when everything was taken from him and when the fire in his veins threatened to burn him to ashes, he kept selling the lie...

"In the right circumstances. With the right person." Her heart was racing now. "Someone I trust completely."
His eyes darkened. "And how does someone earn that trust?"
"By paying attention. By learning what I need, sometimes before I know it myself." She couldn't seem to look away from him. "By being patient."
"I can be patient." It sounded almost like a promise.

Shikamaru sighed and pulled the cigarette away from his lips. “The war."
It was a lie somewhat. He’d liked her since they were kids but had simply ignored the budding crush expecting it to fade over time. It hadn’t and by the time the war came around, he accepted he would always carry it despite his increasing efforts to drop it. He’d tried drowning it in the river, burning it in a fire, covering it up with something else. But it was all to no avail. It stuck with him, always apart of him.
“Have you ever told anyone? Chouji? Her?”
"No."
