Summary
After House's week without Vicodin is up, he intends to begin taking it again. That is, until Cuddy decides to see if she can trick him into quitting entirely, and promises two extra months without clinic duty if he can make it the entire rest of the month. As the days pass, she comes to regret this decision—yet House is too prideful to let her rescind the bet. He figures if he could make it through one case, he can manage a few more. He's not afraid to admit he's probably addicted, but he's also willing to test his limits just to decrease his clinic hour-debt.
Wilson knows House well enough to be concerned. As House struggles to make it through the month, his plan is to convince him to call off the bet—before he hurts himself too seriously to recover.

Summary
This last case had made Charlie feel nauseous. The body of the victim was painful to look at—it made him want to throw up, because it just seemed so cold to carve into someone's skin like that. He didn't tell Don, though—because shouldn't he be used to this kind of thing, after so many cases?
Working on the cipher carved into their victim's skin leads to an upsetting conclusion to the case. Charlie can't handle it—he feels disgusted, he feels guilty—so he takes a walk in the rain.
Don's not quite sure why his brother picked the one day that year they're having a thunderstorm to go traipse about the city after their case, but he's kind of worried—and with such horrible visibility, he needs to make sure both that Charlie doesn't get hit by a car, and that he's okay.

Summary
When House gets home, he rips up the ticket to Vancouver Island, and decides that instead, he's going to use his time off to wallow in his misery and get horribly drunk in his apartment.
That is, until Wilson discovers that House has blown off his vacation plans—and drags his best friend to the airport to catch the earliest beach-destination flight for a much-needed getaway.
House insists on going scuba diving, despite his leg. Unfortunately, the coast of Australia has a few hidden dangers—and it's a particularly nasty surprise when their beach vacation turns into an excruciating hospital visit for House. Thankfully, Wilson's there to comfort him.
At a time when House is seemingly at death's door, feelings are confessed that neither of them expected.

Summary
Temperance already knows what the lessons at school are about. She doesn't need to pay attention, and so, often—otherwise faced with the chattering voices of classmates, buzzing of the lights in the ceiling, and patronizing demeanor of the teacher—she simply doesn't. She disconnects, and her mind wanders.
Russ visits at the window, always. Her day is bettered by his brief presence, a reminder that there is someone who cares about her. Every day, he calls out to her. Every day, she returns his greeting enthusiastically.
It's January, 1992. Russ is gone. Today, he doesn't appear outside her classroom window. It's likely he never will again.

Summary
Jack Burden wasn't a man who could be described as naive or gullible. He wasn't going to fall for counterfeit stories—his employers at the newspaper knew and admired such a quality. But in the world of politics, it's easier to fall for unrealistic promises, to be drawn in by false hope. Unfortunately, Jack's career was not going to be devoid of such an experience.
He trusted Willie Stark and his promises. Maybe a little too much. It was a while before he learned his lesson.

Summary
“If I were to accept the diagnosis, then what would the treatment be? Never love, never- never marry, never have kids? Never have a life beyond my career, and the friends that are going to have those lives? How can I accept that, House?” He asks, and he thinks about his parents again. He thinks about all of these expectations, he thinks about Cameron and her husband and Taub and his two daughters, and he thinks about the fact he’s still failed to live up to the standards everyone else has set. He doesn’t want to believe that he never will.
“Some people find fulfilment from a wife and kids, and it’s all nice and happy. Some people expect to find fulfilment from a wife and kids, and then don’t, and they piss away their lives and make everyone else miserable in return. Some people find that fulfilment somewhere else. We’ve established you can’t be the first, so which of the other two would you rather be? The second, or the third?”
“The third.” Foreman whispers, and it’s like a weight lifted off his chest.
House hesitates. “Good."

but he finds his life in tact, saved by the last person he’d ever call for, The visitor himself.
And when the injured intruder winds up unconscious at his doorstep, it’s his chance to kill him.
His fingers over the trigger,
but the gunshot never rings. He hopes he won’t regret this.
(A fic where homeowner begrudgingly nurses an injured visitor back to health. two idiots are obliviously taking place as the parents of the adopted child. Whoops.)

Summary
Chris felt strange-- as if with every passing moment, he floated deeper into a dream sequence. It's as if they had abandoned the war, in this little foxhole of theirs, and the enemy was a myth to laugh over. The divide of rank that he felt between him and Elias out in the jungle, blurred with every breath.
Elias' smile made him feel dizzy, but that was okay.
