There is an inexplicable draw to Veritas Ratio, even as little as Aventurine actually knows about him, something beyond whatever surface level attraction there was to begin with. It’s not so ridiculous—Veritas is attractive, seems to be interested in Aventurine, and inexplicably was able to drop everything to run his mothers’ florist business for three months. That kind of person is fascinating, objectively, and unique things have always caught Aventurine’s attention.
He can’t remember the last time he looked at someone and thought, I think I want to date you, but that’s enough of an anomaly to make Veritas someone worth learning more about.

Summary
Aventurine is so distracted that he does not notice the car door opening at the back until someone heaves a loud sigh. His heart nearly jumps out from the shock. Is he being mugged in this day and age? He could already imagine the headlines in the news the next morning: The senior manager of the of the Strategic Department of IPC, mugged in front of the university of Veritas Prime?
"Good evening...?" He tries to be civil. Perhaps the intruder will be amazed by his impeccable manners and dashing looks to forgo doing heinous crimes against him. Technically, if worst comes to worst, he's got plenty of credits to spare, but he would rather not lose spare change for no reason when he can keep it for another day.

Or: Ratio mistakes Aventurine's car as his Uber ride. They deal with the drama (read: stupid rom-com) that ensues. (Oh, the tragedy)

Aventurine's flirting doesn't work on Dr. Veritas Ratio. Aventurine's smile doesn't stay in his head for hours on end. Aventurine's voice doesn't overshadow all the other sounds.
Yes, Ratio might be afflicted by an unforeseen affection, but it has nothing to do with the reality of their relationship. Aventurine treats people like chips in his grand games, he's void of empathy and definitely and absolutely under no circumstances would ever allow a romantic pursuit.

Dr. Ratio could only silently carry on, his tired body pleading with him to sleep. And yet, he could not, for fear of seeing the same horrifying images that haunt him in his nightmares.
He is a hypocrite, he knows. He could recite the numerous lectures (scoldings) he's delivered by Aventurine's bedside, his tired face lighting up with amusement and exasperation as Ratio emphasized the importance of rest in his recovery. If Aventurine was here, he would laugh whole-heartedly at him – as silver as a bell in the wind, yet pointed like an arrowhead, carved into a sharpness that blows right through Ratio's chest.
