When the daughter of a prestigious noble family is spirited away on her watch, Haruno Sakura packs her medical bag, a map, and a bottle of sake for a hike into the mountains of central Japan to track her down. Massive guilt, minimal qualifications, and morbid curiosity conspire to send her hurtling over the thin line separating her familiar reality and the Hidden World—where gods, ghosts, and the demons of old folklore carry on alongside and invisible to modern-day humanity. Her only ally is one such demon, the fiendish yokai Jorōgumo, on his own mission to exact revenge on the sorceress who imprisoned him for all eternity, until Sakura unwittingly sets him free.
They strike an uneasy alliance that leads them across the country and in between their respective worlds on a journey that will challenge the divide between reality and fantasy, fate and circumstance, and death and love.
