Summary
A week after escaping from Koboh, Cal comes to Greez with a truth none of them want to acknowledge: they need to head back through the Abyss on a supply run. Sitting between them is Cal's Fall, and questions as to what the future will hold.

Greez was on his feet before the intention properly registered, a hand reached towards Cal in desperation. ‘Because it’s true, Cal! You remember what I said, about this being a rigged game? Just because you think you hold the cards now, it doesn’t mean your luck’s gonna turn!’ Cal didn’t respond, just kept cleaning the blaster, hand moving up and down across the barrel in a motion that would have been soothing if it wasn’t so damned infuriating.

Summary
Upon further inspection, as she fought the Imperials, she realised it was not so much the feeling of ice, but instead the false coldness that comes from something so impossibly scorching that it sets every nerve ending ablaze. It was less of a glacier and more the core of a star, nuclear fusion releasing unimaginable amounts of energy. All stars eventually collapsed under the force of their own gravity, Merrin knew, but Cal shone with the intensity of the largest and most short lived of stars, doomed to tear itself apart in an explosion of fire, a supernova which left behind a gaping hole in the galaxy - a pit of darkness that consumed and annihilated all light. If she looked, not with her eyes but with the gaze of Dathomir, she could just see the beginnings of an implosion in the Force, a precursor to the combustion destined to follow.

Pizza dies to a flurry of arrows, and Scar follows her to his grave in a haze of blinding crimson. Grian, sole survivor of the Sands, joins forces with Dogwarts, his once sworn enemy.
The truth of the matter, as it is wont to do, reveals itself to be much more complicated than first thought. Martyn tries his best to follow the unravelling thread.

It’s not like Thorn is really hurting anyone, not really. He’s only ever meant to be a nuisance, honestly—a thorn in Frostburn’s side. Once Thorn beats Frost—once Ren sees how strong Martyn is—this can all go back to normal. Ren will stop benching Martyn for being weak, and Martyn can stop being Thorn. He'll go right back to being Rose, fighting at Frostburn’s side. That’s all Martyn really wants.
They’re meant to be partners, after all. If Ren would just remember…

It’s silent. Even if he were to Listen, Martyn doubts he would be able to hear anything but the distant mobs, groaning and rattling.
It’s Grian that interrupts the silence. “You know what this is.” It’s not an accusation, or even a question; it’s simply a statement. Martyn tries not to wince away from it anyways.
