Alastor had laughed and laughed and laughed because his cooking is exquisite, and he had nothing in his chest but buzzing static and dead air and the cold skeletal lattice of a radio tower. “Don’t be ridiculous,” he’d said, utterly confident and completely unaware of the suffering that was to come. “Good cooking doesn’t come from something as trite as love. It comes from hunger.”

“I think this is a problem you have to take back to the source, Alastor,” she said, calmly, giving away nothing. The way he tensed and yanked the pieces away told her he knew, then, that she was well aware of how he came by that staff.
“Such a pity,” he tutted without commenting on it. “I suppose I’ll be off, then.”
He was just going to leave. No kiss on the cheek, no banter- just him and his unhealing wound and his broken staff. There was a tragedy to mourning the things you’ve lost long before you hear the news. The widow at her walk seeks an audience with her man a hundred times before the sea sees fit to let her know that he had been dead for weeks.
How long had Alastor been planning on this as a sort of goodbye? A gentle, yet deeply coarse: If you can help me, you’re still useful to me and I only have room for useful things.

“Uh…”
She couldn’t bring herself to look Alastor in the face as she felt her own swell with heat, so she moved her gaze behind him instead. Big mistake, because he’d apparently been heading towards her dad, probably for another half-hearted argument that she was convinced was just their way of saying hello at this point. Her dad’s already pale skin was practically translucent as he sat frozen, a look crossing between shock-induced insanity, mild betrayal, and wretched indignation at the Radio Demon and his missing ex-wife being even remotely connected in the same sentence.
“Uhhh…” At this point the sound was just sticking to the back of her throat, droning white noise to fill the excruciating silence. She needed to actually say something of substance, but the words wouldn’t come out of her, as if someone was squeezing her windpipe. They were both still staring at her like she’d grown a second head. Fuck.

Every muscle goes tense as her golden head droops onto his shoulder, her downy hair a perfect pillow, her expression soft and relaxed.
Alastor’s eyes go wide, his mouth parting as he hisses in a breath- and then he freezes.
He does not like physical contact. Doesn’t enjoy the sensation of hands touching his form, doesn’t like the intrusion upon his personal space, the violation that a hand on a back provides, the prickle that a pat on the shoulder brings.
But this- somehow this is different.

When a sinner fell to angelic steel they were utterly dead and gone. At least that was the idea. But it wasn’t entirely true.
The darkness in the broken soul spilled out into the surroundings and lived on, in a sense, sprouting sentient eyes and imbuing inanimate objects with life. And there was a lot more darkness in Alastor than most demons.
A lot more to cling onto existence in the walls and beams of the hotel.
