“Well, I mean, if I had sneezed, we probably would've fallen anyway. It really wasn’t his fault—what else were we supposed to do?” He shrugged bashfully. “It was my idea.”
John stared, his eyes shifting from Bob back to Ava as he noted her moving beside him.
She was smiling softly at him now, her expression slightly apologetic. She nodded at Bob’s words. “Yeah, not sure how long ‘cucumber’ would’ve done it,” she admitted.
Alexei and Bucky looked at each other, and both mumbled, “Cucumber?”
“True,” Yelena chuckled, her eyes softening as John turned to face her. “And you know, you did also do your best to make sure we didn’t all plummet to our deaths. I mean, it was your fault, but we also really couldn’t wait for a better plan.”
“We were all pretty tired by that point,” Bob added. Yelena nodded, grinning ruefully.
“Don’t forget my shit boots,” Ava put in.
“It really worked out in the end,” Bob summarily decided, shrugging. “I think you did a good job, Walker,” he offered, his face the picture of sincerity.

All things seem to reach an ideal harmony.It’s true - in Afghanistan everything is a paradox – grace cannot exist deprived of dreadfulness, which shouldn’t be pleasant, yet there’s a certain fascination in that absurdity John is beginning to appreciate.

Olivia swallows, face contorting in grief, “I couldn’t keep wearing it, I― I want to move on, Lemar.”
Which is understandable, her existence can't depend on a man who she doesn’t love anymore. She seems undecided, showing what the heavy burden of wearing the ring meant. It's a symbol - the symbol of their oath, and if Lemar were in her position, he would've probably done the same. With the significance that simple object brings, it must've been atrocious for her, a reminder of broken promises of love.
Until death do us part, they say - well, nowadays things work differently, naive sentimentality doesn't last for long in a world like theirs. Especially for couples divided by distance and wars. John changed too, he's not the same man Olivia married almost ten years before, he's less content, less hopeful - and those differences aren't easily forgotten.
She tried, at least. Claiming the opposite would be evil, a bad taste statement.
However, there's still an inner voice Lemar is trying to not listen to, a whisper telling him to be happy about their separation, for it means John can broaden his horizons, looking for someone who will accept and knows his soldier's side well.ch3

John slammed the packet shut, anger and shame and regret flooding his veins, because…
Because his kid wasn’t really his anymore.
Not that he deserved Wyatt in the first place, but… but fuck, it hurt. That he wouldn’t get to watch his boy grow up, wouldn’t get to teach his son how to ride a bike and throw a football, wouldn’t get to see his kid ever again.
And it was all his fault.
John scrubbed at his eyes, but the tears fell anyway–just like he was going to lose Olivia, Wyatt, his family anyway, no matter what he did–and fumbled around for a pen.
He signed every damned dotted line, folded the papers up nice and neat, and slid them back into their pristine cream envelope.
Twenty minutes later, he dropped it off at the post office.
He did it.
He did this.
And he had no one to blame but himself.
John cradled his broken heart the whole way back to the Tower.

“Everything,” Lemar would reply, and John would laugh. “You care about everything and everyone. You want to make the world a better place. I’m proud to call someone like that my friend. My best friend.”
“Yeah,” John had breathed out, head resting on Lemar’s shoulder, looking up at the other man. “But what do you get out of it?”
Lemar gazed down at him for a long moment, something incredibly sad and lonely flickering behind his eyes. “Friendships aren’t transactional, John,” he’d finally replied. He turned his gaze away, slinging an arm around John’s shoulders. “Sometimes it’s just about finding someone you can share your whole self with, and know they won’t judge you for it.”

John would always maintain that Olivia had done everything she could to save their marriage, but John hadn’t wanted to listen. He’d gone out on longer and longer missions, and come home more miserable than the last time. Eventually, it got to the point that one time he came home, and she was no longer there.
John will always carry the guilt of his first emotion after the realization being one of relief. He could finally stop pretending at even the facsimile of being okay. With Olivia gone, there was no one left to care.

“Sometimes… sometimes I think ‘why me? Why did I have to go through that shit?’” There was a stark vulnerability in Bucky’s expression then, one John had never seen before from the other man. It made his heart ache for him. “I had so much I wanted to do, and then the war happened.”
John huffed. “Yeah, that’s how it always is, isn’t it? ‘And then a war happened’ and millions of people get to be the ones that bear the trauma of it.”

“It has only been two years for you,” Steve considered. “It’s a commendable feat. Better than we managed.”
“You only had science Cap,” Peter responded with a renewed pride for his team. “We also had magic.”
Without Strange and Wanda, they probably wouldn’t have been able to pull off this retrieval process. Not that it mattered now because of the price the stone required.
“And maybe our meeting here is meant to be,” Steve spoke with a small smile. “Call me Steve, Peter.”

Tony must have noticed Peter’s inner struggle and spoke softly, “Hey kid. It’s alright. Part of the journey is the end.”
Peter’s eyes were watery as he met Tony’s gaze but he tried his best to smile back. “And this is only the beginning of mine.”
“As it should be.” The world around them brightened to signal that their time was running out. “Good luck Peter. I always knew you are the best of us.”
It was a miracle to meet Tony here so Peter knew he couldn’t ask for more. He could only hope that the other universe would find its solace after the inevitable grief. “Goodbye Tony. Rest in peace.”

What they didn’t anticipate was one joke to derail somehow and end up with #Boblena going viral, with the entire world tuning in to find out if a former Black Widow and this strange man called “Bob,” who looked awfully like the silhouette of the entity who caused V-Day will be “end game.”
Or: Ava and Walker accidentally created #Boblena and decided to RUN with it.

In this short canon divergence fic Nick Fury stops John Walker from killing Nico and sends him to 'Hero Camp' after learning he was injected with super soldier serum. This fic starts right at the moment of the Falcon and the Winter Soldier when John Walker is about to kill Nico. It is not 100% canon compliant but close! Walker meets his ultimate foes.... Maria Hill who has had it with Walker and Yelena Belova who has just been hired to do a job and is eager to get paid.
Essentially this is an alternative to the start of the Thunderbolts but with Fury involved instead of letting Val try and fill the void.
