Sabo shifts, a subtle slide of his weight from one leg to the other. He’s anxious, uncertain, trying not to show it. Ready to bolt at the slightest surprise, whether that’s a thug jumping them in the trash heaps or a tiger leaping out of the trees.
“You don’t have to stay,” Ace tells him, dully, the words coming out in a fog. He doesn’t need to make Sabo wait with him. He doesn’t. He’s spent ten years missing his first brother, but Ace has made do, and he isn’t about to force someone to stick around if they don’t know him, don’t have any reason to care-
“I don’t have anywhere else I need to be right now.”

It wasn’t something she had a lot of reasons to consider growing up, being that the only other child her age in Cocoyasi Village was her sister, and although Nojiko would occasionally sneak a romance novel to read into late hours of the night while Bell-mère pretended not to notice, Nami herself was far more interested in books on cartography. And then Arlong happened, and she had neither time nor energy to waste on soul-searching when she could pour it into money-making instead. You run, you steal, you haul your winnings back to your mother’s grave; if you have enough left in you by the end of the day to crawl into whichever bed you’re sleeping in this month, it’s a better day than most.

“We,” Luffy says later that evening, “should go blow something up.”
“No,” Nami says, in the placating tone you might use to tell a toddler they can’t have cake for breakfast, “we shouldn’t.” And then, because she’s morbidly curious to see how he might even try to justify that: “Why?”
“So they can update Sanji’s bounty poster with a proper picture of her, obviously,” Luffy tells her like he thinks she’s stupid, and Nami is pretty sure that the only thing stopping Sanji from letting her glass slip out of her slack fingers is that it’d be a waste of a perfectly good drink.
During dinner that night, Luffy gets thirds.

A stranger walks into Marcus' shop.

“He seemed more exasperated with Straw Hat than anything,” Marcus says with a shrug. “I imagine coins and historical events are a much more relaxing pastime than dealing with that human hurricane and all the crazy people he has on his crew.”
Unbidden, a snippet of their earlier conversation worms its way through his brain.
“Hmm,” he says thoughtfully after a moment, and at Cole’s raised eyebrow he elaborates. “I may have inadvertently caused the repatriation of items to the last survivor of Ohara.” He shrugs. “Ah well. They’ll do better with her than gathering dust in my drawers, I suppose.”

The stuff on his fingers and on his chin drips down onto his leg and it makes a sound like plinkplinkplink and everywhere it lands there is a small explosion of light.
Tiny fireworks.
He shakes his head and more drops hit the ground and it makes his head spin and somewhere deep down a high pitched voice tells him to stop, to not make it worse, but there are such pretty fireworks all around him now and the fish stop swimming and look down at him and he raises his arms and tells them to come down, come down, watch the fireworks with me!
But the fish only stare, swimming in place, their fins going back and forth and forth and back.
Boring fish.
