Summary
Calloused fingers stroke his cheekbones too tenderly. This isn’t fair. After hearing the whole story, Jayce might never want to touch him like he does now. Viktor must throw off these dizzyingly gentle palms, because he is the last of the living who is worthy of accepting their love. But he selfishly does nothing. How humanly so. Ironic even.
Viktor reveals all the secrets, and Jayce continues to love.

"I’m a doctor.” Viktor says, frowning as one of the latches on Jayce's brace doesn’t close. “I help people with their backs.”
“Doctor…?”
“Dr. Talis.” Viktor says softly. The answer is like a punch to the gut. Jayce has forgotten who he’s talking to. A spouse, in a different life. The notion alone is enough to almost bring those pesky tears back. That insane vulnerability in his brain, the tender and abused place of him that doesn’t know how to quantify such an idea.
Jayce would give anything to Viktor, be anything for Viktor. And in this universe, he’d been his husband. Had given him his name. A gift that has lasted beyond even death.

Have you ever watched someone and/or something you love decay in real time, just to wearily worship the alter of the decomposition spread of their sacred bones in attempt to see if some new form of life will be born from the ashes?
They have. In fact, they bent time and space and eternity doing exactly that.
Fact: Ghosts are a part of grief. They haunt and linger even your grasping attempts to cling to the present, the past projected ever onward on every refracting fragment of memory and mind that gives us some form, some solution to the complex theory of self.
Theory: What are any of us, really, in the wake of the end of everything? We can never really know. That answer comes only through enduring it.
Jayce's best answer? Each of us sorry, mad souls can only hope to hold on long enough that we figure it the fuck out.
