In this softer world, Karkat Vantas realizes something is wrong with Gamzee before hell breaks loose on the meteor... and this time around, Karkat chooses to do something about it. He goes to Gamzee's block, looks around at the utter filth Gamzee is drowning in, and decides: yeah, this idiot clown is my responsibility now.
Gamzee Makara is just trying to delay the inevitable, muting his rage and pain in sopor, but he can feel it... he's running out of miracles, and something is trying to get into his thinkpan and spread the most wicked harshwhimsies over everything. When his best friend and long-time palecrush comes to him and proposes a moirallegience, Gamzee is too tired to talk him out of that clearly doomed decision.
