Summary
Erik has spent a decade from his home in Ithaca, fighting a war that was not his own and then against Gods and nature itself. Now, finally home, he realizes he has one more battle to fight before his husband Charles is free of harm and safe in his arms. Charles, meanwhile, has his own plans.
Erik glanced up at the sky, a mottled grey with a few sparse clouds as meager decoration. The beach in front of him was barren. No people fishing on the shores, no birds or crabs darting to and from, only petrified branches and a few scattered shells. Still, Erik’s heart soared. This land, this beach left to ruin, was his home. Not as he left it, not as he wanted it, but it would be soon, once he saw Charles.
Charles. His husband and partner in everything, left behind to rule Ithaca when Thomas Cassidy of Mycenae requested his aid. He hadn’t wanted to go. A war over a woman he never met, who left of seemingly her own free will, was of no interest to him.
But Erik was not naive. A refusal would have meant he and Cassidy were on opposite sides. Ithaca could not afford a war right now. Not when he and Charles were transforming it into a sanctuary for mutants and intellectuals alike.

Charles Xavier has spent the better part of a decade coughing up with marigolds. Seeing Erik again makes everything worse and better at the same time.
Erik wins. He smirks teasingly, his eyes glinting with that familiar spark from before Cuba. Charles wants to believe it. That this affection isn’t a tactic of some kind, or maybe Erik’s twisted way of saying thank you for rescuing him 9 years too late. It’s not real. Can’t be real.
Not after the way Erik looked at him before. The coldness in his gaze as he listed off every mutant Charles allowed to die, the congealed disgust growing more and more with every word. The harshness - No, whatever love Erik had for him before Cuba was long dead. Charles knew that.
He had known that for years, since the first marigold petal. He was just waiting for Erik to catch up. It shouldn’t be long now.

Summary
Daniel is sprawled out across the bed, loose-limbed and lazy, somehow filling all the open space it has to offer and leaving Armand to nestle into the gaps. His cheeks are flushed, blood pooling like it knows what comes next. Maybe it does. Armand was reading about classical conditioning the other day. About dogs who become accustomed to getting food when their handler rings a bell.
Perhaps Daniel is the dog, Armand’s teeth sharp bells reverberating in his veins. Or perhaps Armand is the dog, Daniel’s blood a song rattling in his ears. He has been a dog before. He runs his tongue along the bow of Daniel’s collarbone, gathers the salt-sweat there and imagines what it tastes like because Daniel does.
Armand remembers he loved Daniel, once, and that Daniel loved him. Or a version of them did, at least. It isn't his intention to go back to that, but it's not not his intention, either. Such is the prerogative of an immortal: to hold two contradicting desires simultaneously. If nothing else, it passes the time while he waits for this miserable interview to end.
