Peter froze. His heart did a weird kick against his ribs. He spun around, rock still clutched in a white-knuckled grip, expecting one of the boys from earlier to be back for round two.
But there wasn't a squad of local jerks waiting for him. There was just a kid.
He was tucked away in the shadows of some rusted-out pallets, sitting right in the dirt like he’d been there the whole time, invisible. He couldn't have been more than nine or ten. He was surrounded by a little semi-circle of trash, all of it arranged on a flattened piece of cardboard.

Rick almost forgets to glare at him, mind and gaze pulled into the direction of the meager pile of cans on the shelves in the corner of the pantry somewhere. They won’t be enough, not for the Saviors and not for the Alexandrians either, but it was all Rick could find. Something in his chest crumbles at the admission, even to himself, and its shame that has him frowning.
