Summary
All Dennis wants is a smoke.
He knows—knows!—he isn't supposed to. He's been fighting the urge for the last three weeks, his single battered pack that's kept him company since Nebraska, slowly dwindling away. Soon, he knows, he'll have nothing but the ashen remains of it all, and he doesn't think he's ready for that just yet.
OR: Dennis takes a smoke break, gets punched, and ruminates on the impossibility of desire.

Summary
Dennis Whitaker has lived a life full of religious speculation, pain, and chronic depression/anxiety. Growing up the youngest of four in Broken Bow, Nebraska led him into early childhood trauma. In a town that could be dated back to the late 1800's, and hardly had even changed since then, there wasn’t much room for Dennis to become anything other than what his parents wanted him to be, a rancher, just like the rest of his brothers, and his father. When the opportunity to study Theology in college arises, Dennis agrees. A year into his studies, Dennis changes his major to medicine without anyone knowing. When his family receives a letter in the mail stating that Dennis changed his major, he is given two choices. Drop out and accept his godforsaken fate in Nebraska, or leave indefinitely. Choosing the latter, Dennis finds himself homeless while studying medicine. He doesn't let this deter him, and later makes it to his residency at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Now entering his fourth year as a med student, he’s entering his emergency medicine rotation, where he meets his new superiors, Michael Robinavitch, and Jack Abbot.

Summary
Jack Abbot is beyond exhausted when he finds a med student crying in the hallway. So far past dealing with the crying that he tries to convince the med student to a marriage of convenience just to stop the tears. The longer he thinks on it though, the more he realizes that marrying the little mouse, Dennis Whitaker, might actually make sense.
Robby is convinced Jack is having a mid life crisis. Or a nervous breakdown. Or petty revenge for his dissapointment in Robby sleeping with Collins. Regardless, he doesn’t know how to help the med student Jack is marrying.
Dennis can’t keep doing this. He’s homeless, broke, and about to have to drop out of med school when he’s so close to finishing. If an ER attending is going to offer a guest room to crash in and covering the expenses of med school, he might just go ahead and marry him. He can always figure things out later, right?

Summary
The shaking and squealing metal didn’t scare him…not really.
It wasn’t the sound of the elevator groaning like a dying machine or the violent lurch that sent his stomach into his throat and his hands snapping out for support. It wasn’t even the way his chest heaved, lungs refusing to cooperate or how the edges of his vision began tunnelling as a sharp ringing filled his ears.
No.What terrified him was the fact that he wasn’t alone in this death trap.
Both his bosses were in here. Two of the three people who kept the ER from falling apart, the ones who made sure patients didn’t riot and nurses didn’t quit mid-shift.
And now they were going to die- all because they followed stupid little him into this cursed elevator.
He couldn’t pinpoint when his head hit the metal railing, only that there was a flash of white, a crack and then something warm and slick trailing down his temple. He couldn’t remember when the world went black, like someone had pressed a blindfold over his eyes.
He did remember the voices, though.Bookmarked by SamiJay94
