    Summary

    It was suffocatingly warm.

Coerthan summers weren’t known to be brutal, but they were a special kind of cruel in how muggy they could be. This heat — however — wasn’t like the Coerthan summers Ysayle was familiar with, even if they were but a distant memory. It was almost as hot as the deeper recesses of Sohm Al, yet it simultaneously felt as if she were drowning on dry land from how humid it was. A low groan slipped from her throat involuntarily as she tried to move but found that to be impossible. Not even her fingers would budge — why couldn’t she move?

    Right.

    She’d died.

This must be one of the Hells.

    ---

Fix-it fic set immediately after 3.0 and going into 4.0. Placed in the care of an unwilling gladiator, Ysayle has found herself alive...somehow. She knows not why, she knows not how - all she can do is build herself a new life now that "Lady Iceheart" is dead.

Blend of one-sided wolysayle yearning, exploring Ysayle's past, and exploring what's going on in Ala Mhigo during the Doman half of Stormblood. Ysayle has a lot of catching up to do, why not join her in it?

    Summary

Estinien stayed silent, his eyes lidded as he continued to stare down the knife. She couldn’t tell if he was seriously considering her words or ignoring her outright, as both were entirely plausible by his expression. A furrow set in deep in time with a heavy sigh, pulling the blade fully from its sheath. “Because I once considered you a dear friend and ally,” were words that cut sharper than the knife he played with, “and naive as it may be, I want to believe it matters at least somewhat.

“But I know what fuels your ire.”

    ——

A journey to find Orn Khai's mother; a journey to reconnect to Surkukteni's past; and a journey to repair a friendship that goes a bit awry. Surkukteni didn't ever think she could mend things with Estinien; let alone catch feelings for the man.

A rewrite of Dragoon 70 to follow, somehow, silence hurts the most —it can be mostly read without it, but I still recommend reading that first. Absolutely love this draft, and I hope y'all do too!

    Summary

It was only as Gwendoline was tying her braids up to wrap them for the night that she finally caught the troubled expression on Zero’s face. It was fraught and increasingly so, her nigh-skeletal hands digging into the bed sheet. Every breath was a laborious one, to where Gwendoline worried that Zero might have taken ill. She was quick to rush to her lover’s side, her dark brown hand contrasting starkly with the deathly pallor of Zero’s forehead. It didn’t feel unusually warm, so what was the matter?
    -

WolZero Week Day 6: Comfort. Gwendoline arrives back at her suite after a long day and night of work only to find that Zero has beaten her in going to sleep. Yet, something doesn't seem right.

    Summary

Barely illuminated, Ysayle’s hair glistened in the faint starlight as she stared out over the ruins of the Churning Mists, seemingly unaware of Surkukteni’s approach. But why would she be? Was this Ysayle really that different from the landscape the Warrior navigated — a figment of the dream she inhabited? She remained despondent, head turned towards the spot where Ratatoskr apparently died, but Surkukteni couldn’t see her eyes to confirm if that was where her gaze was anchored or if it was to the raging void below.

    ---

Dreams have never been a source of respite for Surkukteni. Nightmares have always plagued her, though these latest ones have taken a turn for the worst: wish-fulfillment at its most twisted, dreams of a time long passed and a woman long dead. ...So why did she act so sentient?

    Summary

“It’s still too damn early in the morning,” Surkukteni mumbled in that low timbre of hers, pulling her tail back from Ysayle to get another loud whine. “But...I think I could make an exception. ‘Tis not as if I have anything to do today — ‘sides you, of course.”

That bell of a laugh — a laugh as captivating as a siren’s song — slipped from Ysayle, dragging her hands around to Surkukteni’s front and slipping into her shirt through the loose lacing. “Then why, pray tell,” she started with smirk painted across her lips that could even be heard, “are you not doing that already?”

    ---

It's a rare, lazy morning for Surkukteni. She figures she can sleep in, but Ysayle has other plans...

    Summary

Forever was her gaze stuck on the window, on the icy rooftops of Ishgard — but more importantly, what laid beyond them. This room was a gaol; the chirugeons, its keepers. With how slowly she was healing, she’d likely fully and truly lose her grip on her sanity before she could walk again. She yearned to leave, yearned to travel — hells, she even yearned to see the Shroud! Anything but Ishgard — anything but snow, and ice, and noblemen. Her place wasn’t among them, it was beneath the stars — Nhaama’s domain, not Halone’s — and before a fire, preferably not in a shelter from a roaring, eternal blizzard. Her place was wherever she was needed; her place was beside her compatriots.

Not in a fucking Ishgardian infirmary.

    --

Set in the aftermath of the Final Steps of Faith. Injured near-fatally during the fight against Nidhogg, Surkukteni does what she can from losing her mind while recovering from the dire battle. Thankfully, there's no shortage of visitors to help with that.

    Summary

With all caution afforded to her, the Warrior slipped around the corner to figure out what she was dealing with — what manner of beast had been plaguing the Central Highlands so? Her guess was some manner of bear, but it didn’t make sense as to why it’d trouble them as much as it was. No, none of her guesses — bear, land crocodile, maybe even a behemoth — won out as her breath caught in her throat, grip tightening on her spear.

It was a hoarhound — a manner of beast deemed extinct. No, no it wasn’t just any hoarhound — she recognized the wounds it carried, seeing as she inflicted some of them herself:

The fell beast, Fenrir, had managed to survive.

    ---

An exploration into the Warrior of Light, Surkukteni's, feelings on Snowcloak, a chance encounter with Fenrir, and thoughts on one who should still draw breath.

CW for blood and descriptions of wounds in relation to healing, animal injuries, and strong language.

    Summary

A final run of his fingers through her hair was another failed attempt at something, this being straightening her unruly hair that stuck out at every angle with a portion of it tamed only by the braids that rested at her jaw. His hand hovered momentarily at the side of her face, but he knew not to linger lest she wake from the needed rest. But as he tried to leave, Surkukteni stirred in her sleep.

Prompt 4 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Sleep. Estinien arrives in Shirogane to find the Warrior of Light asleep at her desk, and in the process of trying to help her take care of herself, he gets a bit lost in his thoughts.

    Summary

“How does one in Ishgard deal with the very things that make them them being considered heretical? Things you can’t change, things that are fundamental to your very, well, being? ” She turned her head to look at him full on, wishing she could see what he was thinking under that damn helmet. “And would you — as the Azure Dragoon — act against it?”

    ---

Prompt 1 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Dragon. The Warrior of Light has spent her journey under the guise of a Hyur, but the weight of it has started to push her to seek confidants to help vouch for her should things go awry. After gaining the aid of her mentor, Alberic, she sets off to find shelter for the night - though, she'd soon find herself not alone.

    Summary

She’d almost lost Esteem, who hadn’t said a word since her recovery; she had lost Ardbert, one of the only sources of solace she had on the First. The Scions were busy, her brother reconciled things with Thancred and Urianger and was back and busy with them, and Y’shtola was taking what free time she had to spend it with Runar — where did that leave Surkukteni? With an ache in her chest, that was what.

    ---

Prompt 7 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Free Day. The Warrior of Light is exhausted. She's spent the last year on the First, helping its people with the crisis of an endless day. Having come close to death too many times for her liking, she's allowed a moment's reprieve back on the Source. But that reprieve isn't something she wants, given it's all business: what she wants is someone to spend that reprieve with - someone she misses dearly.

    Summary

“To what end does yours have?” she shot right back, shoving her hands back into her pockets as the cold was starting to make them numb. “I fight to grow stronger, I fight to prove myself. I fight to make sure none look at me and see me as weak, to be someone to look upon and go, ‘well, there’s no doubt she’s got this covered.’ But what of you? So, say you kill Nidhogg — then what? What do you do once Nidhogg’s dead? What is your life now that the thing that was driving you is gone?”

Estinien didn’t seem to appreciate that line of questioning.

    ---

Prompt 6 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Snow. The Warrior of Light and her two companions head to Gorgagne Mills to investigate evidence of heretical activity, hoping to find clues as to the whereabouts of their leader, Lady Iceheart. But the trip is a cold and bitter one, leading to the Warrior of Light and the Azure Dragoon to talk about their goals - even if it gets a bit contentious.

    Summary

“Well.” Estinien turned back to face her, leaning into her space as his fingers once again played with the lacing of the shirt she stole. “We’re not there anymore. We still could do something, if you’re not against the idea.”

That gave Surkukteni pause. She did have an objection to doing anything in the Arboretum, but they were back in her apartment...She pursed her lips as Estinien continued to play with the strings that held the shirt together, glancing from his hand up to him. “Alright,” she said after a moment, brushing his hand away and leaning up to get frustratingly close to him. The air between them was static, Estinien falling still as she slipped into his space — his guard foolishly down. “I’m up to it, on one condition:

    “I lead."

Prompt 5 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Adventure. The Warrior of Light and her companions have just wrapped up a job in Saint Mocianne's Arboretum, and she notices something amiss: Estinien's gone. Worried for his safety, she heads back in to find him.

    Summary

“I didn’t know how to broach it,” she started, wincing as she realized it sounded like an excuse. “How arrogant is it, though? A subject like this, how does one approach it?”

For that, Estinien paused a moment. “Well, no time like the present. If this is going to potentially cause issues, I’d rather you speak your mind than us having a repeat in the future.”

    Touche.

Surkukteni sighed and leaned against him, picking at the calluses on her hands. “It’s going to sound really vain.”

    “And?”

Alright, so he didn’t care about that. A frown set on her face as she tried to figure out how to start.

    ---

Prompt 3 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Fight. The Warrior of Light and her partner have a particular way of figuring out how the night usually goes, that being sparring to see who leads. But when you're the Warrior of Light - a thus far undefeated paragon who's fought gods - how fair is that to your sparring partner, not to mention your romantic one? Much to her dismay, Estinien catches onto the fact she's not exactly been fair in their fights.

    Summary

It was a ritual, of sorts she supposed — ritual of normalcy like she voiced to Estinien. To keep things alive when her job was to take life away, to maintain a place she could go back to when her job damn near required she hold no home at all. Even if the apartment was only home to the plants she cared for, at least it was a home for something rather than nothing at all. Even if she felt guilty that she would probably never call any place a home , at least there was something that kept pulling her back for at least a little while.

    ---

Prompt 2 for WolEstinien Week 2021: Flowers. The Warrior of Light and her dear companion stop at her apartment momentarily to figure out their next course of action, as well as allowing her to tend to her greenhouse of an apartment while there. Estinien has little interest in it all, but comes across a bittersweet discovery.

    Summary

The Xaelic warrior - still holding onto the back of Alisaie’s shirt - gave a heavy sigh as she cast a glance over the party assembled - over Y’shtola, who first posed the question; over Alisaie, who made it difficult to drop the topic; and a lingering look to G’raha, who just gave her a supportive look in the form of a slight smile but didn’t press it himself. There was that desire to lie or deflect - something she was extremely wont to do - but given these were her friends and allies, the truth had to be said at some point. It was just…

“You’ve got terrible timing, Shtola,” Surkukteni began as she dropped Alisaie and moved to lean against her sword.

Jobs for the Scions were never easy; the tasks themselves were frequently arduous tasks, but an oft' overlooked aspect made them all the more infuriating: the Scions themselves.

    ---

EDIT: This fic is no longer canon to my wol - a lot was rewritten. Fic is based loosely on my initial Trust run through Paglth'an, with each section focusing on a different party member and how they made things difficult + an extra for fun. Again, not canon to Surkie but still. Enjoy.

    Summary

One could sum up my life in the simple phrase of, "I never asked for this." While a horribly plain phrase and explanation, well beyond my preferred tastes of wordly flourish, it gets the point across well enough. Although I may have not asked for this queer gift of mine, I just have to cope with what I have available to me. I never asked to be born as what I am. I can't change it. But I can make the best of it if it means the improvement of Lolar as a whole, especially for those poor, unfortunate souls that I interact with on the daily.

That is, if they don't kill me first.
