Raphael remembers:
When he was 11 years old a man came into their home. This man was big and burly and vaguely familiar. More often than not he smelled of something sour that made Raphael wrinkle his nose in disgust.
Raphael's mother was always kind to this man; she never so much as raised her voice even when he yelled at her. And he yelled a lot.
Raphael remembers being ordered to take his siblings upstairs and he remembers reading them stories so that they could be taken away into a fantastical world.

“Hey guys,” he calls out to the room randomly and his crews’ eyes are drawn to him immediately. He’s still laying down and attempting to figure out a combination of cards to place from the frankly absurd amount that he holds in his hands.
“Yeah, Luf?” Sanji asks, watching his captain stick his tongue out in concentration as he tries to figure out his next move.
“I love you guys,” he announces. Just like that. Staring with a furrow in his brow at his cards. Casually. As if this was a normal thing to suddenly announce to your crew.
Nobody says anything for a moment as they just stare at him. The silence is broken by a blank-faced Nami who’s paused in sewing up his hat.
“What did you do now?”
Luffy tells his crew that he loves them on a late evening in the Merry. The responses he gets in return are varying.
