Alhaitham was a good actor. No, that was an understatement: Alhaitham was an impressively skilled actor. He was utterly unfazed throughout the exchange, — even while discussing honeymoon plans — a languid arm thrown around Kaveh’s waist, rubbing absentminded circles onto his skin as if he were perfectly at ease pretending that Kaveh really was his lover, his safe space, his joy and comfort.
And it was… oddly soothing. A firm, grounding grip on his body, a compliment here and there, a demonstration of care and attention in between comments about Inazuman tourist attractions. It felt natural, even, organic, as if Alhaitham weren’t acting at all. And that was the worst part. The last thing Kaveh needed was to fall in love with his roommate (who he also considered to be his best friend, although he’d never admit that out loud).

Alhaitham froze mid-step, the branches slipping from his hands and tumbling away from the pile he had been aiming for. For some inexplicable reason, the air felt suddenly warmer—and his pants uncomfortably tighter.

He turned toward Kaveh, his thoughts still caught on that peculiar choice of words—only to find him crouched beside the dog, scratching it between the ears as he retrieved a small piece of wood out of its mouth and added it to their growing pile.

“Genuinely,” his Kaveh interrupts. “Who is this? Maybe the ruins altered your brain as well. Since when do you agree with something I say without putting up a fight?”
“Be quiet,” Alhaitham retorts. “You didn’t say it, Senior Kaveh did.”
“Senior-?!” Kaveh splutters. “Unbelievable. Of course you would find a way of being respectful to me while insulting me at the same time.”
“How is that insulting?”
“You never call me that!”
“We graduated years ago. He,” Alhaitham tugs on Senior Kaveh’s hand pulling him in, testing a theory. “is my senior, you’re my-”
“Hey!” Kaveh interrupts, looking at their younger selves pointedly.

Especially as a single man living alone, with barely enough time to do anything fun with his actual human friends outside of overworking himself on commissions, stressing over clients, and crying himself to sleep over the occasional glass of wine.
Kaveh gets courted by a crow and unknowingly finds himself a husband.
