Summary
Suddenly, all at once, the grief hit her in a wave so fierce that her knees buckled. A sob tore itself from her lungs as she crumbled to the floor, her skateboard slipping from her fingers and hit the tile with a loud clatter. Mike jolted and grabbed her as she fell, and without really thinking, she latched onto her friend and hid her face in his shoulder.
Billy was dead.
Billy was really dead.
Mike’s arms wrapped around her after a few seconds, his chin now resting on her shoulder as she sobbed into his.
It felt like she was dying.

Max and Mike find comfort in each other after witnessing Billy's death.

Erica’s eyelids flutter. Then they open. She has the biggest brownest eyes Lucas has ever seen except his own when he tries to see how close he can get to the mirror before he can’t see anything anymore. Eyes that blink, then look at Mama, then look at Lucas.
“Hi,” Lucas whispers, and his body gets heavier because now he’s carrying something. A job. To be the big brother. He gloms onto Mama’s front so he can hug them both. “Hi, Erica. You’re my baby sister now. So I’m gonna be your protector. Like a guarding angel. I pinky promise.”
(Five times Lucas hugged Erica, and one time Erica hugged Lucas.)

This is what they do for each other. Will has been sleeping in Mike’s bed with him every night for almost 6 months straight, at Mike’s insistence. This mandatory quarantine has been shitty for so many reasons but the Byers staying in the Wheeler house is not one of them. If Will can’t sleep or has a nightmare, Mike’s there to hold him until he stops shaking. And Will does the same for him. Every time. Like it’s the easiest thing in the world.

Will learns what happened at the quarry.

“What are you sorry for? Your awful driving?” Her face cracks into a wide smile and she doubles over laughing. She really did find herself hilarious. Max realises quickly that she’s the only person in the vehicle cracking up, “oh you’re serious?”
