P.I.X.A.L.'s not sure when she fell back into that comforting desire. It was a part of her. Like Zane's purpose to protect, she was made to be useful, to assist. It was in her name, sandwiched between 'external' and 'lifeform'.
It drove her, made her aim for higher and greater. For years, she felt she had made it. She was in the perfect place, giving all that she needed and stealing moments for herself. But now the mould cut for her was too big and she was desperately trying to fill the gaps.
If she wasn't useful, then she was useless. Useless robots didn't survive.

Jay turns to look at Cole, and finds that he isn't looking back. "The water?" He asks.
"The rain, specifically. I always liked it."
Jay nods in soft, aching, understanding. "I get it." He whispers, carefully trying to trace Cole's face with his eyes, trying to hold onto a specific detail before it slips through his fingers, before it loses it's form.
"I know you do."

He’s beyond relieved. Of course he is. But he finds himself telling Steve in the dead of night, with Steve sprawled across an air mattress on the floor of his room, that he’s not sure he has any clue who he really is without the Upside Down. To Steve’s credit he doesn’t freak out. Instead, he stretches and peers groggily towards the vague direction of Dustin’s voice and nods in understanding.
“That makes sense. You’ve been dealing with this shit since you were like, an infant.”
Dustin rolls his eyes.
“Since I was twelve.”
Steve waves it off. “Same difference.”

The first time Lloyd is kidnapped, he is terrified of what could happen to him. He just keeps his mouth shut, pulls through the pain, and hopes his friends will come for him before it's too late.
The latest time Lloyd is kidnapped (he has long since lost count), he is annoyed, because he got snatched off night patrol and wants to sleep. He tries to pass the time, messes around a bit, and makes sure to let his captors know that he won't be the one to pay when his siblings come for him.

Jay stares across the cave at Nya and Kai. Kai is leant against the far wall of the cave, his gi abandoned beside him, hair more mussed than normal with sweat. Kai’s torso looks awful, blood and purple bruises creating a macabre painting of a battle.
Nya is hovering above him on her knees, valiantly attempting to halt the bleeding of her brother’s wounds as he gets gradually paler.

It’s dangerous, lighting a campfire in a place like this. Fire is a beacon of light, warmth, shelter, safety. And even the most deranged monsters have the basic instinct to flock towards things that beckon positively to them. Kai takes a gamble he probably shouldn’t with this, but he needs this. It’s comforting. Even if, symbolically, he is Fire already—and thus, is continually only in the company of himself.
