“So... that was my niece.”
“I heard,” Shane nodded, taking a few steps forward until he was right in front of Ilya, connecting their hands, “Are you okay?”
“Of course I am,” Ilya squeezed Shane’s hands, “She said she wants to come here. To stay with us. For summer, at least, maybe longer.”
Shane’s eyes moved quickly, scanning every inch of Ilya’s face and Ilya could feel it - the gaze and the emotion, carefully examining before asking, “Do you want that?”
“I-” Ilya cleared his throat, “It is up to you, Shane. I would love to have her here, to get to know her, but it is up to you. This is our home and it is our life and I-”
“I know, Ilya,” Shane’s voice was so soft that Ilya genuinely felt like he could melt in it, “but I’d love to have her here, too, if that’s what you want.”
Which is exactly why they’re currently parked in an airport parking lot, a week after that phone call took place, waiting for Katerina, whose plane just landed.

OR, in which Ilya's niece (Katerina) turns 18, gains access to the trust he created for her, starts to distrust her father, and ends up staying with Ilya and Shane in Canada for the summer.

Summary
Newly traded to the Ottawa Centaurs, Ilya Rozanov is so close to having everything he’d never thought he was allowed to want. He can see the man he loves more than four times a year, he’s surrounded by a team who supports him through his injury, and Shane’s parents have unhesitatingly accepted him as part of the family.
Except his lingering concussion symptoms have kept him sidelined from hockey, his boyfriend is still two hours away, their schedules are a disaster, and Shane’s team is, well…it’s full of assholes. There must be a way to make this all work out.

Summary
Shane is still learning that he doesn't have to be perfect in his own relationship. Ilya is still learning the rules of Shane's bad days. So when Shane tries to push him away after a crushing loss, it leads to a tense argument. But ten years of rivalry are no match for Shane’s tears; the second he starts to cry, Ilya folds like a house of cards.
Or: Shane tries to starve himself as punishment for losing, Ilya tries to feed him, and it turns into a very soft night of pampering because Ilya is legally incapable of staying angry at a crying Shane.
