Lance had always known that his element would be water.
Water was life.
It was the quenching of thirst on days that scorched the earth into an arid dust bowl. It was the scent on the wind as thunder approached after the moisture had clung to his body in that familiar humidity. It was the pull of the ocean, the rolling waves that tucked his body into its gentle curls, like a mother welcoming a child after time apart. It was the whisper that would reach his ears, as if soft secrets beckoning him to listen as he awaited the promised monsoon season from the steps of his family’s home, hidden away...from those who fear them as ‘different’.
Yes, he knew that when he was brought before The Judgement, just like his brothers, sisters, mother, father, and grandparents before him…it would discern his truest calling as nothing else but water.
He hadn’t felt worried. Nervous? Perhaps.
No, naturally, he was. The familiar tinge of excitement that permeated his body was not unlike that of a passing rainstorm; each drop a new possibility of the future resonating against his skin before it sinks, bone-deep, and settles, simmering…just below the surface.

Shane has been watching Ilya kiss strangers for years. Sometimes it’s because someone is either brave—or foolish—enough to try and prove the fabled curse of the matchmaker wrong. Sometimes it’s because no one can help themselves, because it seems like such a harmless thing to do; stealing a kiss like it will give them some sort of guaranteed assurance in the universe. It makes Shane’s stomach curl every single time. He can see the way Ilya stiffens, how he swallows too late, too polite or too jaded to ask them to stop. The world doesn’t see how he hates it, because the world never sees. They see a legend, they see a myth and nothing more; not the person who has to put up with it.
Shane does.
He sees Ilya’s mouth, of course. Not because he’s greedy, because he’s in it for a stroke of luck or faith or whatever delusion people want to buy into. Shane wants to taste those lips because they’re Ilya’s, because he knows...
