“Yes, that.” he hummed, “Was all nonsense. You’re good at what you do.”
Shane smiles, then. “I’m glad you think so.”
“Not as good as me, obviously.” Ilya added, and Shane rolled his eyes. “Can’t be too nice to you, can I?”
“Guess not.”
Or,
Shane Hollander has a chronic pain condition and Ilya Rozanov is deaf. This inevitably means that they're going to be compared to one another, and this is only made worse when they're drafted to rival teams The Montreal Metros and The Boston Bears as first and second pick.
It was rare enough that mainstream sports received one disabled player but two? Drafted during the same season and always one-upping each other?
Well, it was unheard of.

He had sold his penthouse in Boston and almost all of his ridiculously expensive cars, looked up the house in Ottawa, and bought it.
And then, Shane visited him with a solemn face. Like the end of the world would be soon or something.
Ilya could have come up with literally a zillion things that make Shane that kind of face, but he really hadn't seen that coming when his serious boyfriend had said that about vaccination.
“HPV? What the fuck do those letters even stand for?”
OR:
Shane wanted to have unprotected sex with Ilya. He googled it and found out there was vaccination, and he arranged it for himself and Ilya.
And Ilya needed somewhere discreet to get vaccinated. So, Ilya was in Shane’s parents’ place in Ottawa. -

And what that had to do with anything, even Clark didn't know… Batman was a professional at making the alien feel flustered. He mastered the whole ‘being intimidating’ concept.
"Is that so?" Batman turned back toward him, and it was clear even he didn't understand what the other was getting at.
"Yes… you know, the Moon is so beautiful. If you look up at it, it doesn't blind you like the Sun… you can just simply admire it." By this point, Clark had taken his eyes off Batman and started looking up at the Moon.
OR, Clark starts to ramble about his fascination with the Moon to Bruce, and Bruce takes it as a sign to send Clark pictures of it.
Clark is confused. Bruce is trying. They are in love. -

Clark had yet to make any attempt at movement, practically pinned against Bruce not unlike a steel beam himself. He was half-kneeling, half-blanketing Bruce's entire body with his own like a literal human shield. Bruce's heart sank when he realized how eerily quiet and still Clark had been as he'd run through his standard procedures.
Was Clark okay?
Batman and Superman get a building dropped on them, and neither of them are doing too great for two very different reasons.

“And here I was going to behave, ask if I am yet allowed to touch you.” Ilya reaches between them to capture Shane’s chin between thumb and forefinger, looking intently into his eyes for a half-dozen heartbeats or so. Then his lips are on Shane’s, a warm press of mouths turned wet as Ilya slides his tongue between Shane’s teeth.
“It was so fucking annoying, not being able to,” Shane grumbles into Ilya’s mouth, breaking the kiss so he can nuzzle Ilya’s pulse instead. “Not wanting this is stupid as hell.” As he rubs the underside of his jaw into Ilya’s shoulder, he feels the alpha’s low chuckle vibrate through to the base of his own spine, making him squirm.
“For once we agree on something, Hollander. You are very stupid and annoying.”
Some months after Shane recovers from rejection sickness in Ilya's bed, they share their heat/rut together at the cottage, both clinging to the delusion it's still casual.
