Summary
Working on his masters in robotics and AI, Wei Ying is very familiar with experiments that go unpredictably pear-shaped. There are only so many times you can accidently crash the entire university grid or retrofit eerily opinionated AI personalities into your professors’ equipment before people get cranky. So, he’s taken his next hypothesis home: given an adaptable programing style and enough time (and boredom), ordinary household appliances can become weapons of destruction.
To be fair, he didn’t plan to break anything.
This is how Wei Ying meets his neighbor. Or rather, this is how Wei Ying’s Roomba introduces him to the hottest man alive (and his two adorable bunnies).

Wei Ying blinked. He cast back to their conversations over the last few days, snagged a half-baked thought on the end of a fuzzy memory, and caught on, “Ah, the control talisman? The one you said didn’t work?”
Lan Zhan nodded once, a slight incline that was equal parts grace and tension.
“The one from when we were kids…” Wei Ying mused to buy a few seconds. He wasn't sure where this was going, but he decided he was game to play along and find out. Melodramatic and mischievous, he added, “No, my husband told me it was a failure. After all, my very clever, very handsome husband knows best, so it’s dead to me.” Lan Zhan gave him a pained look, but his ears were a little pink. Huh. “But…I’m sure I could resurrect it if he had something in mind.” Wei Ying batted his lashes, smile turning sly, “That’s something of a specialty of mine...”
