There's a known risk with feeding snakes live mice. They don't eat very often, with a week, if not longer, in between meals. So if the snake isn't hungry just yet, it'll let the mouse live.
This isn't a problem right away, but mice need to feed too, and once it realises its lack of options, it'll bite the nearest edible thing.
That's why, if the snake doesn't eat the mouse, it's best to separate them before it gets injured, or worse. Sometimes, likely due to lack of previous experience, the snake won't even fight back, as if it simply didn't have the instinct to.As if instincts are worth anything, anyway.

Percy does not regret his choice all these centuries ago. It was either that, or being stuck as a semi-underling of that guy with an ego bigger than his bolt, and who really needs that? This way, he could do whatever without being bound by stupid laws, so, win-win.
Sure, the occassional trip to Tartarus might be an inconvenience, but if its that or having to deal with Zeus? Eh, easy choice.Now if the gods, and most notably that retarded old horse, would just stop letting tiny snacks run wild on the streets, that would make his life a whole lot less stressful.
