As prey knows its predators by instinct, the experiences of those who came before you weave their way into instinct, guiding their descendants even when the threat may no longer exist.
Instincts exist to drive primal fear in response to predators that have long since gone extinct. Those whose ancestors survived famine store fat with more efficiency, storing energy for a food shortage that may never happen. Mice who have learned to expect shocks at the smell of cherry blossom give birth to children that show aversion to that same smell, even without having experienced shocks themselves.
