His chest was bursting, his heart thundering, his legs picking up speed, gripped by a sense of peril he couldn’t understand, or ignore, fear weaving through the whole of him as he just couldn’t find Shi De anywhere.
And then, the smoke appeared, grey and black, toxic clouds, floating out under every door, trapping him, stealing his breath, but he kept going, yelling, terrified for Shi De.
He couldn’t find him. The smoke paralysed his lungs, forced him onto the ground, the faint sound of endless screams from downstairs echoing inside his mind before he lost consciousness.

Shu Yi hasn’t felt this weak, and frail in the longest time. And when he did before, she was always there to comfort him, and replenish his strength.
He kept going without her for a long, long time, suppressing so many of his needs and wants, such a big part of himself, just to survive, to function, to move forward, never letting anyone close enough to rip the bandage off of his hidden wound, sometimes so large it could swallow him whole if he let it.
Gao Shi De ripped away the last few threads of it, and now Shu Yi feels completely undone, exposed, and vulnerable in the worst way he could think of, yet unable to fight it. Everything inside him is craving, wailing, for that touch, that hug, that sense of comfort, warmth, kindness, and care, and he’s crying, dismayed by his surrender.
And because Gao Shi De’s comfort feels unbearably real, and downright earth-shattering.

That’s how Shi De finds him, anger at these people, sympathy and a deep need to protect and care for him brutally tugging on his heartstrings. He sits down beside him, carefully wraps an arm around him and adjusts Shu Yi’s head to rest on his shoulder. He lets his fingertips trace the softness of his face and brushes gently through his hair, touching his lips in a lingering motion to his forehead.

He swallows harshly, his eyes burning with unshed tears, his heart pumping blood so fiercely his eardrums are rushing with it.

“Who is it?” He needs to know now, because at times, Yuxin’s apparent fearlessness makes her underestimate the consequences of her actions, and Shu Yi is usually the one overthinking and over analysing every detail to make sure there won’t be repercussions for anyone - but he didn’t expect that he would have to do that tonight.
“Don’t be nervous, we can trust him,” she assures him quietly, but her words only make him freeze inwardly, anxiousness rippling through him. He? It could be anyone, yet there’s a whisper of a name in his mind, veiled by his apprehension to even think of this incredulous possibility.

"There's no talcum powder anywhere, I promise." Shu Yi remembers his prank from when they were still rivals, or rather, his unsuccessful pranks, and Gao Shi De, in the end, successfully 'pranking' Shu Yi into falling in love with him.
He smirks cheekily at Shi De's raised eyebrow expression.
“I’m sorry, but I was waiting for you, and you’re still not ready.” Shu Yi sulks in his most adorable way, melting Shi De instantly.

“So? Will you honour your word, or not?” She comes close to his face, "Do you dare?" taunting him.
He scowls deeply frustrated at her and this predicament, taking a glance at Shi De next to him, about 30 centimetres of a silver chain between their cuffed hands.
The worst is that it’s Shi De, but the absolute worst is that Shu Yi was the one to come up with the pranks and dares, and none of his friends has ever cheated, or denied fulfilling one, and if he is the first - no way, he wouldn’t live it down his whole damn life, he can’t betray his own rules - and they truly agreed to do this - how could they have been so drunk and stupid?!
His teeth are literally grating together as he has the hardest time saying. “Fine.”

It sounds like a plea, and Shu Yi is severely confused, quickly turning into annoyance. "Why is it your business?" Shu Yi pulls free, glaring at the man.
"He can't give you what you want."
Shu Yi is so puzzled at the guy’s boldness, he forgets to be angry.
"How would you know?" He snaps back.
The man - Gao something, was it? - breathes out and looks even more intently into Shu Yi’s eyes, the urgency about him seeming very oddly genuine, making Shu Yi lose his breath.
"If you only want sex, I can give you that. Just please don't go with him."
