When left vulnerable and alone, even the strongest can collapse. Philip, on the other hand, is very well aware that he does not qualify for that title. Time and time again, he chose to flee, abandoning those he cared for and leaving them to die, despite his best efforts. And yet, all the same, he carried with him the remnants of their trust.
Just once, he wants to live up to that trust, to be worthy of all the things he had been given. Desperately, he wants to grow.
When his pain and despair are at their peak, and when the voice only he could hear was at her loudest, Philip chooses to open his eyes and uncover his ears.
So long as he can stand up straight, he can change even the smallest of things- even if he burns himself to ash in the process.

I’ve always struggled to understand why I like Phillip so much. I just boxed those feelings up as “anyone could become Phillip in the wrong circumstances.”
This story is stunningly evocative in its portrayal of Phillip and also the mental situation within him. It outlines the ways we dismiss our fears in half truths and cloak them as politeness or kindness or selflessness. The way Phillip slowly grows his understanding of himself and admits when he plainly doesn’t know or understand is something that I personally really needed to see. The fact that retreating from the library goes from a crushing mistake to a triumphant act really impresses me.
