Shane finally goes toe to toe with Montreal under Ottawa's flag. The rookies are scared shitless, and his old team looks worse for wear. It breaks his heart, but there can only be one who holds the Stanley Cup. It wasn't going to be the Metros.

It’s supposed to be just another tight, physical game against the Voyageurs. Hard checks, ugly chirps, Rozanov bleeding a little for dramatic effect, the usual. Shane thinks he’s prepared. Ilya is, as always, one mildly illegal hit away from throwing hands. Bood is having the time of his life.
No one, however, is prepared for Luca Haas.
Nineteen. Polite. Painfully earnest. Carries art supplies in his backpack. Has never had an on-ice fight.
Until he does.
A story about rivalry, locker room insanity, rookie feral awakenings, and the exact moment Ottawa realizes their baby has teeth.

He can’t help the way his gaze wanders down the length of Shane’s body, can’t help but inhale deeply so that he smells the familiar scent of Shane’s shampoo just lingering underneath the cologne. He clasps his hands over his bottle, then clamps one down over his mouth as he watches Shane walk away.
Don’t do it, Ilya, he thinks, even as he’s getting up out of his own seat and following Shane.
He reaches Shane in five strides, grabs the back of his jacket and steers him to a secluded corner just behind the bar.
“Are you still with Rose fucking Landry?”
He can’t be any clearer than that.
“No, I’m not. I just told you, we’re not–“
“Compatible, yes. How the fuck am I supposed to know what that means?”
Ilya knows exactly what Shane was doing when he slid off that barstool and pressed himself against Ilya, and he is a very weak man for Shane Hollander.

“What are you wearing?” Ilya asks, his voice sounding strangled.
Shane looks down, confused. “What’s wrong with what I’m wearing? I always–”
“Why are you wearing your glasses?” Ilya interrupts, and Shane notices the tension in his entire body when he speaks.
“I ran out of contacts,” Shane says.
“So you are wearing glasses to practice?”
“Yeah, it’s just one practice,” he says defensively, even though he’s done nothing wrong. “I’ll grab a pair of contacts from the eye doctor this afternoon."
“Right,” Ilya says, his eyes laser-focused on Shane’s face as his lips set in a tight line.
“Is that a problem?” Shane quips, and it comes off kind of bitchy, but he’s so confused as to why Ilya would have any issue with him wearing his glasses to one practice. He normally loves Shane in glasses.
Ilya seems to shake himself out of whatever weird-ass mood he’d fall into. He smiles, but it looks strained. “Of course not. Let’s go.”

Or, Shane has to wear his glasses to practice and Ilya absolutely cannot deal with it.
