Three years after the Battle of New York, Alexander Pierce is the President of the United States and the leader of the Global Crisis Council. Having lost its Avengers, the world remains quiet in the face of mass exterminations by the newly built Trinity weapon.
The Black Widow sends Steve Rogers, the dearly not-quite-departed Captain America, on a mission to help an old friend. Steve’s memories, and his willingness to confront them, might hold the key to recovering crucial intel to bring about Hydra’s final defeat.
…or, the one in which Steve has to help Bucky decode the Winter Soldier's activation words and realizes they're all about him.

So this can't be how it ends, Buck. If it's our story, it has no ending.
The man Howard Stark saves in the 1950s cannot be Captain America: the spot has already been taken. There is only one mission the freshly thawed Steve Rogers is interested in, anyway: saving Bucky. What happens when he accomplishes the task in record time?
...or, the one where Steve and Bucky zig-zag across the Eastern Bloc to discover which purpose ghosts can serve and whether things left unsaid in a previous life are easier to confess the second time around.

Featuring: recurring OC character(s), the city of Budapest, and references to T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets.
All parts are stand-alones, though you can find some Easter Eggs referring to the other fics if you squint.
Canon non-compliant after Endgame (there's no TVA in these stories).
