Summary
Narita Brian, hunter and protector of the village, is sent out into the forest to track down a wounded deer as the sudden onset of winter makes predators desperate for a meal. The idea is to grant the deer a merciful death before it accidentally brings wolves or bears closer to the village and puts their livestock at risk. Unfortunately, a pack of wolves have already found the deer, and its monsterous protector, a beast of myth of legend that strikes fear into the hearts of every uma, the most dangerous creature Brian could comes across: a horse.
And there's a lot more to the creature than meets the eye.

Furina sighs, running a hand through her hair. It was easier when the Knave had reason to hate her. She hadn't made much of an effort to hide her dislike then, so Furina didn't have to wonder like she is doing now.
The cake still sits there, tempting her. After a moment's hesitation, she picks up the fork again and takes a small bite.
Its taste is light, refreshing, with hints of mint and vanilla dancing together in perfect harmony. Still as delicious as she remembers it.
She savors it for a few seconds, allowing herself to enjoy this simple pleasure.
Then, without a second thought, she picks up the entire box and dumps it into the trash.
The cake lands with a soft thud, its perfect layers and cherry garnish now destined to be wasted. Furina stares at it for a moment, nestled among discarded tea leaves and crumpled paper, before closing the lid of the bin.
Whatever it is that the Knave wants from her, she will not let her have it so easily.

Soon after the flood, Arlecchino attempts to worm her way into Furina's life through cakes and gifts. Furina cannot understand her motivations—nor will she let her in so easily.
