“I never asked for you to protect me, Lucy,” Alex shot back, her voice trembling with unspoken emotion. "I wanted you to trust me to make the right call, to lead, even if it wasn’t always perfect. I wanted to be trusted as much as I trusted you.”
“Alex, I trust you.” Lucy said, her voice quiet but firm.
“Not enough, I guess.” Alex muttered and huffs out, taking a step back from Lucy, who, despite the distance, still seemed to inch closer to her.
“I mean, Danvers not wrong,” Maggie winced, “For someone who complains about Alex's recklessness, you sure tend to do a lot of steamrolling yourself.”
This was not the kind of disagreement she wanted to be in— not entirely, at least.
Lucy stopped in her tracks. “Excuse me?”
Lucy’s lips pressed into a thin line, guilt flickering across her face.
“Yeah, of course, you’d side with her," Lucy scoffed, her voice laced with hurt and frustration. “'Ride or die,' right?”

Summary
She's not a good dancer by any metric. But, in the fading lights, Alex moves with a freedom that has Lucy's heart catching in her throat. This is her release, she realizes. This is where she leaves behind the weight of her regular life. She doesn't have a care in the world as she rolls her hips to the music.
Lucy's life has always been regimented and ordered. Lois had been the rebel, talking back to then-Lieutenant Colonel Lane with smartass quips from the first moment she could string a sentence together. Lucy had always fallen into formation like a good soldier.
Alex makes her want to jump out of line.

There's a crash from upstairs as Ruby tumbles out of her room with heavy steps at the top of the staircase. "Mom? Alex? Are you guys okay?"
Alex shrinks back. She stuffs a handful of grapes into her mouth, chewing guiltily, knowing that leaves you to answer your daughter.
"Fine, honey!" you call back in that fake mom voice you only use when you don't want her to worry. After all, if this is it, you wouldn't want Ruby to hate Alex when all is said and done, would you?
