“I have to get a little territorial every now and then. Those are the rules.” Lena says simply, as if that's explanation enough in itself and Kara laughs again.
“Rules, huh?” Lena nods. “And what other rules are there?”
She scrunches her nose, pretends to think. “I have to let you defend my honor at least three times per year even when it isn’t necessary. I have to press the signal watch before pulling out whatever experimental gun I have in the works to stop any would-be assassins.” Kara nods as if this rule is of the utmost importance.
“And?” She goads, eyes crinkling in the corners.
“And, I have to ask you to dance whenever the opportunity arises.” Lena answers mischievously, eyeing the space to their left where a few other couples have already decided to take advantage of the live music.
"Well how could I say no to that?"
Kara has the perfect life. She’s married to the woman of her dreams. She’s been offered the promotion she’s always wanted. She gets to be a hero and fight crime alongside some of her favorite people. Things truly couldn’t get any better. But when her health takes a questionable turn, she quickly discovers that things aren’t always as they appear.

Summary
After Alex and Kelly's wedding (and specifically Kara’s use of the word "friends") Lena really needed to take a break from Kara, because all the “unrequited” thing was getting too much. They haven’t seen each other much the last couple of months, but they’re both very much present in Esme’s life. After some mission gone wrong with Kelly and Alex, the two women end up going through a portal, thus leaving Esme unattended and parentless. So, logically, everyone decides the best thing to do is to leave her with her aunt while they figure it out. Problem is, Esme doesn’t seem to want to leave her godmother's side; or her aunt, for that matter. So, maybe they can live together for a few days until Alex and Kelly get back, right? For the good of the child. What could go wrong?
