Alex, Kelly and Esme had been laying on the sofa watching TV when there was several rapid knocks on the door.
After hearing the door knock once more, Alex got up and went to answer it. When she opened it she found her sister Kara and their friend Lena.
“Kara-Lena, hey! Come in.”
Alex stood back to allow her sister and Lena into her apartment.
“We got your text” stated the blonde “What’s so important we had to rush over?”
Then Kara saw it, the little girl nestled into Kelly’s side looking rather frightened.
“Hey, isn’t that the little girl Kelly was talking about the other day?” asked the younger sister “Es...”
“Esme” Alex interjected finishing her sister’s sentence “And yes it is”
“What’s she doing here?” asked Lena.
Alex looked back at Kelly and the little girl and saw Kelly give her a little nod, she then turned back and faced Kara and Lena. She then ushered them over to the kitchen.
“Well earlier during all the commotion with the humanity totem and people raging out, Kelly wanted to check on Esme - good thing we did because when we got there we found her locked outside.”
“What?” questioned Kara worriedly
“Her foster family had locked her out the house so that she could protect them from the attackers”
“Why would they do that?” asked Lena, confused and slightly heartbroken.
“It turns out that Esme manifested some of her powers to protect her and her foster mother from one of the attackers minutes before”
“So because of that they decided to use her as a guard dog?”
“Basically”
Suddenly Alex and Lena heard something crack and looked down to see a piece of the counter broken off in Kara’s hand.
“Give me an address.”
“Kara,no”
“Alex, they used a little girl as a guard dog because she’s an alien and has powers - It’s not right.”
“Kara I know and believe me I want to hurt them for what they did too but I can’t and neither can you.”
Lena saw the rage in Kara’s eyes die down.
“Fine.”
“So what happened afterwards? How comes she’s here?”
“Well after they got caught they then decided to give her back to the care home claiming ‘she wasn’t the right fit.’”
“Oh but she was the right fit when they were using her as a guard dog to protect them from vicious attackers” Kara replied snidely
“Don’t even get me started” stated Alex “Anyway as the van pulled her up to take her away Kelly and I knew that we couldn’t let her go back to that awful place - the housekeeper there is a controlling bitch, she makes the kids wear meta cuffs”
Suddenly Alex and Lena heard something crack again and looked down to see another piece of the counter broken off in Kara’s hand.
“Kara, can you stop breaking off pieces of my counter!”
“I’m really trying, but this story is making me angry.”
“How about we get to the end of the story before you have no counter left?” suggested Lena
Alex nodded.
“Where was I? Oh yes, so me and Kelly decided that we couldn’t let her go back there so we decided to take her home with us instead.”
“Isn’t that like child theft?”
“No, I still have my license from before when I started my adoption process and with Kelly being a social worker she automatically has a license.”
“Oh, well how long is she gonna stay with you guys? Just until another foster family becomes available?”
“Actually we were we thinking longer.” stated Alex
Kara looked at her sister puzzled, while Lena smiled having caught on to what Alex was hinting at. Alex just looked back at Kelly and Esme and smiled before turning back to face the two women.
“We haven’t told her yet but we’re going to adopt Esme, we’re gonna be a family.”
It took Kara another ten seconds for it to register in her brain before she let out a small squeak. Alex immediately hushed her and turned round to make sure the young girl wasn’t looking in their direction.
“Kara shh” the older sister pleaded “we don’t wanna ruin the surprise”
“I’m sorry, I’m just so happy for you Alex! This is always what you’ve wanted and it’s finally happening.”
Caught up in the emotion Kara hugged her sister tightly.
“Too tight Kara” yelped Alex and Kara released her quickly
“Oh sorry Alex”
Alex then looked over at Lena.
“You’re not gonna squish me too, are you?” The redhead asked cautiously
“No, but I am happy for you both” smiled Lena softly “Can’t wait to see you be the most amazing mum”
“Thanks Lena, I can’t wait to see you be cool nerdy aunt Lena”
“Oh my god I’m gonna be an aunt” the reality just hitting Kara “This is so cool!”
Alex and Lena just laughed at the bubbly woman
“If you promise to calm down you can come and meet her.”
“Really?” Kara asked excitedly then calmed herself down “I mean I’d love to meet my future niece.”
Alex just laughed again.
“Come on you two”
Alex began to walk off back to the sofa towards Kelly and Esme and Kara and Lena followed. When Alex reached the sofa she crouched down so that she was eye level with the little girl and introduced her to Kara and Lena. The girl took to them straight away which made both Alex and Kelly happy and then they all sat on the sofa and watched TV.
