The fact James Barnes has a history with Steve Rogers makes it worse considering him and the Captain having never quite come to terms with each other. A tension that’s only made worse when this new soldier is interested in talking to no one, let alone his old best friend. Something relatable as he’s yet to reconcile with Thor. As it turns out, unexpectedly yet again, they have a fair bit in common. Something that helps when they accidentally end up with the really really unexpected.

    For example, there were five or six very important things that Tony needed to be working on right now. Thirty or forty marginally less important things, too, that he definitely needed to be thinking about at the moment. Since he only had two hands, and ATHENA wasn’t quite as attuned to him yet as JARVIS had been, Tony was currently only actually working on three of the things that he needed to be working on.

    “Sir,” Jarvis spoke for the first time in over an hour, “Let me call Captain Rogers again.”

    “What’s the plural for a group of Steves?” asks Natasha, and it’s weirdly comforting that the question has a hint of whimsical hysteria to it. Good, Bucky’s not the only one who’s not dealing well with all of this.

    “A clusterfuck,” he says. “A clusterfuck of Steves.”

    Despite how little sense his life has made since he got on a battlefield to fight a bunch of aliens, Bucky's pretty sure he knows exactly what's happened when a much older Steve appears after the mission to return the Infinity Stones: he left Bucky behind to get his much deserved happily ever after in the past. Only then another Steve shows up, and another. And Bucky realizes he still hasn't got any idea what's going on.

    What he does have is a whole lot of Steves, a fraught relationship with his own Steve, and tentative plans to leave. But the more Bucky talks to all these different versions of Steve, the more he begins to wonder if leaving really is what's best for him and his Steve, or if there's a way to make something new out of their long friendship.

    It’s a long and difficult journey, as Bucky works not just to let go of his past, but to also rebuild his own identity and a future for himself. And with Sarge at his side, Bucky slowly comes to realize that not everything he once loved is lost, and if he can just have enough faith in himself and those around him, he might, just might, get his very own happy ending.

    Bucky IS Sarge’s person after all. As the once abandoned puppy Bucky saved one night from freezing to death, he knows, more than anyone, just how much Bucky deserves it.
