Summary
As the Student Council President, Rudolf weighs pros and cons for breakfast. She determines how to achieve the maximum outcome with the efficiency of a machine. But utility is a cold master. It requires the suppression of the immediate, emotional impulse to comfort a single crying student if that comfort contradicts the rules that keep the other two thousand students safe.
She sits in the dim light of the council room, staring at a suspension notice. One student broke curfew to visit a sick relative. The rules are absolute; if she makes an exception for one, the precedent weakens the structure that protects the many. The calculus is clear. The suspension is just. The greatest good has been preserved.
Why, then, does the "right" answer feel so heavy?
