He looks up, when she gasps and tightens her grip on his hair, and it's like he sees right through her, past all the bullshit, and any other day or time or person she'd close up, recoil in horror and at the intensity of been seen like that.
But she looks back, because she sees in that look that he sees her, not who she used to be, not some fantasy, her. He's touching her, not using her as an alternative for anyone else.
It's in that moment, as she comes in his mouth and he doesn't pull away, that she realises she's undeniably, irreversibly, fucked.

All Tommy can see is the dark green watch band wrapped around his brother’s wrist, and it punches the air from his lungs.
“Why are you wearin’ that?” He asks, his voice too loud in his ears, the words reverberating off the cabinets around them. “The watch, his watch, why the fuck are you wearin’ that?”

'“It’s that bad, huh?” Joel said gruffly, self-consciously running his hand through his hair, his eyes fixed on the curls on Benji’s head. “I…” he cleared his throat and looked at Tommy for help.
“Tess cuts our hair,” Tommy blurted out, pushing a glass of whiskey into Joel’s hand as he came around the couch.
Maria blinked at them for a moment, thinking back to literally three days prior when she’d given Tommy a trim. And the dozen or so times before that.
“Used to,” Tommy clarified, sitting down. “She always cut our hair. It’s… her job.”
Joel took a swig of his drink and sighed, not quite able to look at Maria or Ellie yet.
“I’m so sorry, Joel,” Maria said quietly.'

Get a grip, she urges herself. When confronted with danger, it doesn’t work to curl into a ball and shut down. If she’d been in the habit of that she would still be back in the Boston QZ, huddling like a scared rabbit in that ruined mall. Threats must be met with counter-threats, with action. She can’t jump back in time and beg Joel not to do the thing he’s done. The thing he’s let them do to him.
And if you could do it over you’d have to go back and change it more. If he’d never met you, he’d have never done this. All he’s done is what he’s been doing since you’ve been with him, placing himself between an Infected or a bullet or a blade. Again.

Ellie had worked hospice rotation in FEDRA school. All the orphans had to. It was a shit job, literally: changing adult cloth diapers and sponging down injured who were either too sick or old to care for themselves.
Fedra couldn’t pay civilians enough to see the ugly end of life that they had coming for them, like staring down the barrel of a gun. Instead the orphans did the heavy lifting, looking down at the elderly and injured like strange artifacts from a time when society had the resources to take care of people who didn’t contribute.
She never thought any of it would come in handy, until Joel’s lying on a bare mattress in an abandoned house and he won’t be moving under his own power for days on end.
