“We save whoever we can,” Saltbeard had said on the television. The dwarf's face had been tight with frustrated strain, his weathered face lined with grief. “And if that’s not everyone, we get up the next morning and do our damn best to make it so that next time, it will be.”
Spellbound, Hamid had nodded along. Then he’d run into his bedroom to change into something presentable. An hour later, he’d walked into the meritocratic offices and asked how one applied to become a hero.

After months of training, Hamid has learned to control his superpowers, and hardly ever grows scales without meaning to. But when his mentor and their handler go missing on the morning of his debut, Hamid and his team are sent to investigate. Jon is not an idiot. Contrary to what some of the people who love him might believe, he’s not even entirely oblivious to social cues, though he’ll admit they elude him perhaps more often than is standard.
All of this to say that in the week following their escape from the Lonely, as Martin graduates from shy smiling glances and tentative clutching of clammy hands to full-bellied laughter and warm, steady embraces, Jon is fully capable of figuring out where things are going.

Across the water, climbing up the other side of the slope, was a figure she recognized as Rand al’Thor. He stood out, of course—taller than any wetlander, with the fire-red hair of an Aiel, but even if he had been dressed in cadin’sor and not shirt and trousers, he would not have known how to become part of the Threefold Land. Out of his gaudy red coat, though, he could almost pass for a true Aiel—not a warrior, not dressed like that, but perhaps a blacksmith. His shoulders were nearly broad enough.

"I'd say I'd feel too bad to take your money," he says, tone playfully superior, "but honestly it isn't as though it would be much of a loss nowadays."

The demon Aziraphale arrives in the Garden and takes a deep breath, smiling at the full moon above and savoring the taste of rich earth and growing things.
Eventually, he finds the most well-guarded fruit in the Garden. In the darkness, it isn’t immediately obvious, but out of the dappled shadow of the leaves, a pair of glittering golden eyes reflect the moonlight. Slowly, he makes out the shape of a great long body wound through the branches of the tree, sleek black scales shifting to a deep scarlet at its underbelly.
It's beautiful.

Yuuri laughed. “Maybe I couldn’t feel it,” he said. “But I saw it, when I watched you.”
Victor stood, dumbstruck. He knew then and there that his skating, his loneliness at the top, his whole life had been worthwhile, if it had kept this beautiful creature on the ice.
