The tears she’d been holding back at the Military Police Headquarters and all through the jostling waggon ride through the dark streets of Shiganshina burst out of her. A strange, strangling cry erupted from her mouth, and her face was hot and wet. Her legs stopped working, and she fell onto the floor. Her body shook, and she couldn't breathe no matter how she gasped for air.
“Mikasa!”
Eren crouched next to her. His hand was on her back, warm through the thin fabric of the nightshirt.
“I want to go home,” she choked out.

They would be lucky to even survive a few years after they graduated. Eren was determined to survive and win. Mikasa was determined to make it happen, to see it through. Armin wasn’t sure if he was determined enough for any of it—but he was following and making things connect, watching stars align in his dreams and watching his comrades die by titans in every other waking moment. He watched Eren become one. Then, in the dark, in the blinding light of a titan’s explosion, Armin was dedicated to something: making sure they all came out alive.
