    Summary

“What are you doing?” Edwin demanded. “Crystal and Charles are in danger!”

The Cat King titled his head. “So are you. You can’t just go running off into the woods like that. That disgusting little growth could be on any branch or rock or ugh, tree.”

“Exactly!” Edwin said, putting as much heat into his words as he could muster. “Which is exactly why I need to go and warn Charles and Crystal about Monty’s betrayal and Esther’s trap.”

“Not happening,” the Cat King said. He used one finger, the end of it almost looking more like a cat’s claw than a nail, to point at his wrist. “As long as that bracelet is on, you fall into my domain. And I’m not letting something of mine be taken by Esther.”

Aka the Cat King takes Edwin away during the forest scene to protect him from Esther's trap, leading Charles and Crystal to believe he died.

    Summary

“Fine, yes. I do think about it. Doing…that.”

It’s not quite the risk that was “Charles, I’m in love with you” on the stairs ascending from Hell, but he still feels like rolling underneath the sofa to hide. He doesn’t even know what he’s asking for, not completely.

    Bookmarker's Notes

"Edwin hadn’t understood the appeal of girls, but he’d loved his cousin’s car. Gold trim, canvas cabriolet, purring on a four-cylinder Henriod rotary-valve engine. Riding in that car with the top down may have been the last time while he was alive that Edwin truly believed the world had wonderous things in store for him."

    Summary

Edwin needs every resource at his disposal to escape Hell and the only thing he can count on is himself.

    Every part of himself.

He grows used to using his past bodies as tools to escape, as less than human, as his own form as a means to an end. Escaping Hell doesn't mean escaping those thoughts of being disposable, of his form as a utilitarian machine made to solve wrongs and always gain more knowledge and tools for when Hell inevitably comes knocking again.

Charles, and his warmth of spirit, deserves more than the wretch Edwin has become.

    Summary

All of a sudden, a hand lands on Charles’ shoulder.

It is instinct, buried in his blood a decade and half ago, through the shoulders of a little boy that was learning that not every touch was kind, not even those of your father, that makes Charles flinch back.

But Charles looks up and he sees that there is an angel in front of him.

Charles never would have imagined that angels were dressed in denim jackets and faded rock band t-shirts, but then again, he didn’t have whiplash when he was picturing angels on his knees in church as a kid. He was mostly focused on the way that he preferred his mother’s religion to his father’s, the way that he preferred Ganesha and the like to hate that was spewed from the pulpit every Sunday.

Maybe the reason why Charles never pictured an angel looking like this was because he was taught that angels were just extensions of a god that sought to punish, rather than all soft long hair and pretty lips and ink dark eyes that any painter would kill to capture.

And Charles definitely wouldn’t have pictured an angel as driving a pick-up truck, which is parked on the median a car’s length down from Charles’ wreck.

    Summary

Soulmates are a remarkable thing. The universe giving you another person to be the other half of your soul. Someone to love you, unconditionally.

Or a slight canon divergence if Edwin and Charles were soulmates.
