Summary
A mash-up of Our Flag Means Death, Season 2 and the 2012 film, Populaire, which absolutely no one asked for. Populaire is used here to sketch out a world of typing as a sport, and a path to glory, or at least, cushy sponsorships. Maybe the Queen's Gambit snuck in here a little bit too.
Gender-swapped, all our boys are girls; Jim remains non-binary in all universes. This AU is set in the early 1960s in a place that is not really France, but more like the no-place setting of a 90's Mentos commercial. Am I not selling this enough? Break-up era Ed with a massive beehive updo drinking her way through competitions. Tearful Stede typing love letters. Competitive typing. Fashion shows. Beatnik cafes. Weird dreams. Alien abductions. Obscene morse code. Becoming a better friend. A second chance.

“Wait--is that…?” Lucy tilted her head and squinted at Ed. Bingo.
Izzy rolled her eyes and Fang shrugged as the young woman took a slurp from the straw of her wine-bottle-sized iced coffee and took another look.
“Wow, it is her. Wouldn’t have recognized her if there wasn’t that meme of her punching a paparazzi.”
“Paparazzo,” Izzy corrected.
“What?”
“Singular, one guy. Settled out of court,” said Izzy, ever the stickler.
“The Snoopy t-shirt almost threw me off the scent, looks like kids’ pajamas,” Izzy and Fang exchange a look, as Lucy got that in one, Ed hunted down vintage pjs, “but those are clearly Comme Des Garcons pants and Margiela tabi boots. And not the knockoffs off from Amazon that scuff and peel right away, don’t ask me how I know.”

After the fancy party and the almost kiss in the moonlight, Ed is determined to kiss Stede but keeps postponing, still unsure of Stede’s feelings. But today is Kiss Day, and he's gonna do it! For real this time.
Among the loot from the French merchant ship, Ed finds an etching that inspires him. Ed's etching leads Lucius to invent comic books. Lucius' comic book leads Frenchie to invent animation. The crew comes together on these artistic projects as Stede arranges a special dinner and a game at the harpsichord while wearing fancy wigs. This is a high stakes game, folks, the winner gets a kiss!

“You will be sacrificed to the sea dragon the night of the next full moon,” his father tells him, in the same matter-of-fact tone he used when informing Stede of his engagement.
Stede stares at him, blood draining away from his face. “What?” he manages. Sacrificed? In two days? He looks at Lord Hornigold, who nods in agreement, and Nigel and Chauncey, who look very pleased. “You mean I’ll… I’ll die?”
“To keep our people safe,” his father says.
“Ned has to be placated and it’s only the blood of a royal virgin that appeases him,” Lord Hornigold explains.
Prince Stede Bonnet is seconds away from being sacrificed to a sea dragon when a sea monster named Ed rescues him instead.
