Henry is a doctor at a NY public hospital. His visa to work in the States expires, and he has to leave the country. His only option for another working visa is to go back to the UK for a year and apply from there, something he is not ready to do. His boss, June Claremont-Díaz, offers the help of her recently graduated attorney brother. It is not just that nobody asked Alex how he feels about helping Henry. It is that he and Alex met a couple of years ago, before Alex went to Texas to do his internship, and it didn’t go well. Every time they’ve met since, they’ve been rude to each other. Nothing predicts this time might be different.

Summary
After Henry kissed Alex on New Year’s Eve, then ghosted him for two months, Alex was furious. But when Alex finally got Henry alone in the Red Room the night of the State Dinner, Henry apologized for his behavior, and the pair seemed to have worked things out. Even though they agreed to keep things ‘casual’, Henry invited Alex to his upcoming polo match, offering another opportunity for the two to spend time together.
Then Henry goes radio silent after returning to London, withdraws from the polo match, and unexpectedly enlists in the military, ghosting Alex a second time. After some angry text messages, Alex writes him off and tries to move on with his life.
When Henry shows up at the White House almost a year later asking President Claremont for political asylum, Ellen has to figure out how to protect Henry while not starting a war with Britain, and prevent her son from causing another international incident, all at the same time.
Or… Henry ghosts Alex (again) after the State Dinner, then shows up at the White House ten months later requesting political asylum.

“No,” is the answer, “It’s embarrassing, but I never got a name. It was just a drunken, one night stand with a cowboy.”
Alex freezes, he can literally feel his blood run cold, and he remembers where he knows that scent. It was easily the drunkest night of his life. His biggest regret was losing the handsome stranger.They both mess up, but they've been looking for each other ever since. How could they not?
