Ilya could only nod, the knot at the base of his throat growing tighter. He wanted to confess that it was more than just care about him. He was hit with the realization as soon as Shane’s crumpled body lay lifeless on the ice; he was in love. He loved Shane; red and hot as the blood coursing through his body. Passionate as his love for hockey.
And it scared him. It scared him that he felt this way when they played the sport that they did. Scared him that people could hurt Shane for his team affiliation, for his sexuality. He was terrified. And he wished he had his own Rose Landry to talk to about things, the way Shane said he did. He wished he still had his mom, the way Shane did. He wished a lot of things at that moment. That Shane would open his eyes. That he would open his own eyes and it was all a terrible dream and Shane was sleeping next to him with the little pout in his lips.
But it wasn’t a dream. And Shane still had not opened his eyes.

It's a regular game day in Ottawa and the Centaurs head out to face the Nashville Symphony. Ilya is already worried that Shane's ribs are giving him trouble, but when Shane goes down after a hard hit worry becomes dread, and Ilya can't get to Shane fast enough.

One single closed door stood between him and them, and there was nothing Shane could do to stop the inevitable from happening. His dad was still talking, still acting like they weren’t seconds from impact, and Shane was having a panic attack. That was the only way to explain it, the sudden weight on his chest, shortness of breath. He went through the motions of flipping open the lid of his suitcase and pulling his charger out of its dedicated pocket, all while his lungs were collapsing.
How was he going to explain this?

We’ll have to wait until we can take any action in Mystic Falls.” She gently traced her finger over the small cut on Josie’s forehead, feeling it close beneath her touch. “Plus, this land... feels familiar. And distant at the same time.”
Josie exhaled shakily, pushing herself up with a small wince. Her dark eyes flashed, the familiar poison purple still flickering within them—charged with the dark magic of the spell or ritual she had just used, the one that had anchored her to the timeline. “So, the spell still kinda worked.”

Because if you did… if you felt nothing, tell me right now and I will walk away and we can agree that this conversation never happened.”

Mike looked like he just wanted to burst into flames. He needed to keep his composure in the van, but he couldn't even try to comprehend why she would do this. He tried his hardest to think what could contradict her statement.
Right there and then, he thought of the perfect plan.
