“Would you cut that out?” Shuichi waves a half-hearted hand at him, “And lower your voice!”
Kokichi stops in front of him, clasping his hands together under his chin, “Well I’m sure you can figure out why it’s supposed to be sooooo magical, riiiiight Mr. Detective?”
“I just don’t see what the big deal is,” Shuichi tries again weakly.
Kokichi peeks over his shoulder, head tilted curiously. Shuichi is a little terrified by the glint in his eyes.
“Ah,” he says quietly, “Does Shumai need a demonstration?”

Kaito raises a skeptical eyebrow. “Did he say he was mad at you?”
“No, but I can tell.”
Oh, he can tell. Kaito loves him, he truly does, but Shuichi is so quick to assume the blame for things that it’s almost exhausting to keep telling him otherwise. Did they teach him to jump to the same conclusion over and over in detective school or something?
The day Shuichi has an emotionally charged conversation with his boyfriend without one or both of them freaking the fuck out during or after will be the day Kaito looks back on that time he walked in on Kaede and Rantaro comparing dirty-talk while painting their nails without feeling the urge to find the nearest blunt object and bludgeon himself with it. That is: not happening anytime soon.
He gestures for Shuichi to go on. Present your evidence, oh completely unbiased detective.

“I don’t know,” Kokichi pretends to think it over, tapping a finger against his lips, “Maybe you’re plotting a crime against me right now.” Kokichi’s eyes narrow, and his gaze turns sly, “Maybe you’re trying to steal my heart!”
Shuichi doesn’t understand it. These little pokes and prods in the direction of flirting. He knows he isn’t the only one reaching out. He’s watched Kokichi’s cheeks go pink and his head duck to hide it. The nicknames and brash declarations of love sound a little more honest sometimes, tinged with quiet affection. On Shuichi’s more generous days, he lets himself admit that the signs point to Kokichi wanting to reach out in the same way that Shuichi does.
And yet, Kokichi pulls away. It’s frustrating.
“And if I am?” It comes tumbling out of his mouth before Shuichi thinks better of it.
Kokichi’s eyes widen, and his face goes carefully blank. The muscle in his jaw jumps when he clenches his teeth, and he swallows.
“I’d say,” he murmurs, violet eyes flashing with something sharp and bright, “That you have to catch me first, Mr. Detective.”
Then he’s gone.
