Regarding being informed of his mother's passing, Meursault held a solemn expression. However underneath his stoic look, he felt.. Numb. It was like he wasn't affected by grief, by the death of his own mother. This was like how Meursault felt when he was informed about his father’s absence through Maman: Shallow, hollow, like his heart didn't have emotions to follow to. Leaving him uncaring about his family's passing.
