“And you will be King?” She asked only because she could imagine no other title for him. She always thought he had the bearings of one: uncommon, ignoble, passively imperious.
“My position abroad prevents me from claiming that title,” Claude said. “Which is why you—the Ashen Demon, Hero of Fódlan, the Enlightened One—will be Queen. Then, when I return you will marry me. It will make us the most powerful rulers the world has ever known.”
“If I were to say no—”
“Which you’ve indicated you will not.” His hand waved.
"If I said no, would you have crowned another in my place?"
"No." Claude's eyes simmered: something weary boiled alive at the bottom, the rising heat too slow to promote the panic, yet the will to live went unchecked. He looked like he had tried to check it. "Why?"

Claude and Byleth, both desperately in love and unable to believe they are a person capable of being loved, create the most powerful marital union in history.

“Watch the locals,” Asra said. “Watch where they go, where they look. It’s easiest to start by looking for someone you relate to in the crowd, and taking their movement as a recommendation, of sorts.”
“Someone I relate to?” Aster laughed. They idly played with the dark wrap over their burgundy skirt, scanning the people by the dark.
“There doesn’t have to be an obvious reason as to why,” Asra added. “Follow your instincts. We both know they’re superb.”
Aster saw someone, just standing after having taken a seat at the pier. They were tall, with long black hair, a longer black beard, and blue eyes that shimmered like the sea they’d been looking out on. The lids of the stranger’s eye was washed with a warm, golden hue, and rouge kissed over the sharp line of the cheekbones.
The stranger patted dust from their breeches, and stole away over the street and down an alley.
Aster took Asra’s hand, smiling widely. “I have received a recommendation.” They said, pulling him along.
“Then lead on,” Asra answered cheerily.

It was a routine of theirs; one so precious, and so common, as to have become a sad little tradition. Before Claude flew out in the morning—on business of Almyran state that would keep him away sometimes weeks, sometimes months—they gathered all the softest, loveliest materials they had. They lit the fireplace at the foot of their downy little love nest, and they twisted up in each other however much they liked between turns tending the flame. It was a last day spent just for them: no disruptions, no duties, no propriety to get in the way.

Byleth’s boots clicked over the polished deck. He extended his arms out, joining his family and hugging them close. When the children’s faces nuzzled into their mother’s dress or father’s cape, he took the chance to kiss his wife in quick reassurance. She sighed.
“Are you afraid?” he asked, voice no louder than a whisper so the small ones would not hear.
“No,” Flayn shook her head. “I do not know yet what I feel.”

Summary
Fantasies never truly last.
Byleth learns this cold truth when Edelgard strikes Claude down with one hit: clean and clinical, as if she had planned it long in advance, fine-tuned it in practice, and executed it with impeccable precision.
It’s a theater act -- it must’ve been -- and it’s the only explanation that makes sense.
