Summary
That BAMF Grian tag is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, so if an absurdly cracked protag is not your vibe, this probably isn't your jam. If that is your kind of protag, then welcome to the Kept Bird AU! What you need to know for this series is that Scar is an Emperor, and Grian is his concubine/plaything // head strategist // assassin. At court Grian is the head-empty sex toy that's just sitting pretty at Scar's feet (brain sharp and cataloging all the people that petition his emperor), in private he's Scar's lover and his chief strategist (nobody besides Scar ever sees the imperial chief strategist - wonder why), and at night he's known as the Angel of Death for how silently and precisely he strikes (all at Scar's whim of course).

Summary
Arthur hadn’t gone back to Arkham.
He technically wasn’t Arthur Lester anymore, either. Maybe he'd expected that to sting, the last piece of himself being removed like a splinter, but it was the least of the things he’d lost recently.
The first time he’d seen the creeping black fog curling out of the shadows on the street, he’d been on his way home from repairing a piano.
Sometimes, he would approach the homes on the job and there would only be a slight shadow clinging around the edges of the windows. Sometimes, the houses were enveloped completely in the blackness, leaving only enough room for Arthur to pass through and knock on the front door. And sometimes, he’d approach an unknown house made darker by the writhing shadows and the hair on his neck would stand on end.
All of those things could have been a trick of the light or a trick of Arthur’s likely diseased mind, but then the pianos started playing without him.
OR
John is gone, and Arthur goes back about the business of living. Until he finds himself thrust back into the dark underbelly of the world and decides to find his best friend. Or die trying.

...Nightmares haunted him in his sleep. If every waking day wasn't spent reflecting over his actions while he was part of the Eggpire, then his dreams plagued him to the point that he swears he's becoming mad. What doesn't help is that he's in prison.

Jon looses his humanity and goes back to fix things, totally unrecognizable, with new instincts, and the same love for Martin. Meanwhile everyone else is questioning what the hell is up with this monster fawning over Martin.
Edit: Please see the note. I am aware of Jons ability to nod and type and such. I actually am paid to communicate with non verbal people. This story is built on the idea of no one recognizing Jon. If he tells them "hey, I'm Jon!" then the story would be like two chapters long. You can stop telling me every chapter that they can communicate. I know. I know the same way Agatha Christie knows who done it and then doesn't tell you till the end. Because if you solve the problem of the story the story ends.

He was far more a pragmatist than a romantic, and while he knew it was something that existed in the world, it was never something he’d put much thought into outside of an intellectual curiosity. That being said, it wasn’t possible to fully ignore the black letters inked along the inside of his wrist. The handwriting is small, and a bit messy, the letters more separated than Jonah has seen before. Inelegant.
