Summary
Young Scarlett is alone, lost and in need of food in the wilds, she walks around trying to navigate and eventually sees a rabbit that she chases down, kills and eats. While eating, another outlaw approaches her, the woman has only a small bunch of blackberries that she managed to forage but needs more food to sustain herself and requests Scarlett to share the rabbit with her as she will also share the berries. After a bit of hesitation she agrees and they share a meal together and details about their lives.

Summary
Mallory and Albert Browne angst, their lives practically mirror each other. Explores their attempts to persuade the other to join them, hopelessly of course, as the condition of them both only results in deterring the other from listening. Mallory looks at Albert and sees a criminal, misguided and a result of the loss of the “education” provided at Stonemoor. Albert looks at Mallory and sees an exploited child, self-loathing and brainwashed.
Not even her death allows either of the two to forget. Doctor Calloway’s mark was indelible.

Albert discovers a fountain regarded as “magical” and able to perform miracles and give people the answers to anything they want. Albert tries to find out who he is via the fountain and who his family is. The fountain in response only reflects himself and leads him to his friends, eventually Albert decides that he doesn’t want his past and what it took from him to define him and chooses to triumph over it and focus more in the present than the past and that even if he doesn’t have a known biological family he realises that he is still able to build connections that are as strong/stronger than the conventional idea of family “The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb” sort of thing.

I stared down at the seated figure of crimson-stained blonde human hair and skin, stared at the damaged white cotton dress and for a moment, I forgot what this meant. I thought erroneously that she looked like an angel, a bloodied, dishevelled, tainted mimicry of celestia. I thought that she looked like a fallen angel that rebelled against God and exiled herself from the heavens. But then I regained my ability to think after so long of not needing to, after so long of letting my body just run away from the world with as much sense as an animal. I saw the body underneath her and looked at the crippled corpse’s face, its eyes peeled back and mouth gaping in shock. The blood pooled out from a jagged tear made in its neck, having long dried by now into the crevices of the rotting skin. The grass had been turned a bright and sombre red and looking at her again now I realised that she was not a fallen angel. She was a ghost, a ghost of the person I once knew.
