  1. Summary

A canon-adjacent exploration of Phainon and Mydei's relationship, with slight divergences in minor details.

Explicitly switch/versatile inclusive. Involves trauma, violence, poor mental health, death, and the doomed nature of the relationship—but also the conscious choice to love anyways, even in the face of fate.

Series direction will be determined by the events of canon. The author makes no promises, but would very much like to be able to give this a happy, or at least hopeful, ending.

    Summary

Phainon hates that Mydei gets away with everything he does: skipping class, bleaching his hair; turning Phainon’s life into a mess. Hates that he can’t help but lust after him in spite of it all, replaying his honeyed accent curling the vowels in his voice when he says Deliverer, and imagining him saying Phainon the very same way, low and tentative beneath him, and Phainon knows he’s fucked.

There's six whole months of this left until graduation, if his heart hasn’t exploded by then. Six months of pretending he hasn't thought of licking the blood off Mydei’s naked foot before biting another wound into it, wondering which colors his teeth would carve onto tanned skin — six months of pretending Phainon is normal; that he’s good.

Or: Mydei transfers to Era Chrysea Uni in the middle of the semester. Phainon is good until he isn't.

    Summary

“Ah, yes. The traditional year-end celebration of consumerism and capitalism.” Ratio does not roll his eyes, but Aventurine hears it in his voice all the same. “How joyous. And I see that you’ve taken over more than half of my apartment with these tacky decorations of yours.”

    Summary

“How was it,” Neikos continues. “Did he satisfy you?”

He speaks as if he knew Phainon hadn’t, and that Mydei is still hungry for more, curious to know what sex would feel like with a Phainon-lookalike that stares at him the same way Phainon does, with that gaze that promises whatever happens in the bedroom will stay between them. Mydei takes a sharp breath.

He leans back, summoning mock confidence, arms crossed and feeling like he's won when Neikos' gaze is drawn to his chest. “What,” he starts, twisting his lips into a devious grin and feeling, coursing through his body, the rising warmth of a man who’s set himself on fire. “Think you can do better?”

The bed dips when Neikos leans over it, one knee pushing against the mattress, both arms bracketing Mydei. His voice is even lower when he speaks, smooth as silk and twice as soft.

    “Think I can’t?”

    Summary

The problem with Phainon is that—well. There's actually no problem with Phainon, if you discount the fact that he works six days a week and spends his single day off being on-call; his intertwining savior-hero-martyr complex (according to Cyrene); his ugly rusted beat-up truck (according to Hyacine); his general demeanor and boring lifestyle (according to Cipher).

In which Phainon has an ethical crisis.

    Summary

Mydei first hears of Phainon’s past one night by the fire.

On the outskirts of Okhema, a flask of ambrosia passes between them, the air heavy with silence. Liquor loosens Phainon’s lips and he speaks casually about destruction and loss and ruin. About a friend who ran with him through wheat fields he’ll never see again, and a mother who sang in a language no one speaks anymore.

He laughs as he tells Mydei that he aches to go back home — to his friends, his family. He laughs and laughs between sips of wine, like none of it means anything.

The end draws near. Mydei and Phainon find each other anyway.
