Will blinked. “Chicken?” He frowned, trying to picture it. “Isn’t that the one where you get up on someone’s shoulders and try to knock the other person off?” The image flashed so suddenly and absurdly that a laugh almost escaped him. He caught it halfway, feeling stupid.
Mike shook his head quickly. His pale cheeks flushed, covering his freckles in a faint pink like he was embarrassed, or maybe warm. Will told himself it was probably just the basement lighting. Or the heat.
“No,” Mike said. “Like… the other game.” He rubbed his thumb against the edge of the blanket, not looking at Will now. “The one where you dare each other to do stuff. And you have to keep going until someone backs out.” He swallowed. “Chicken.”

Will’s reddened eyes narrow, bewildered. “Mathematically?”
“If there’s two hits left, we’d each only get one,” Mike explains. “But if we shotgunned, we’d both get two.” God, this is the best idea he’s had in ages. He should’ve stolen Will’s weed, like, months ago. “That’s like, bang for your buck. This is simple math, Will Byers. Keep up.”
In which it’s well past midnight in New York, Will can’t sleep, and Mike feels like they barely know each other anymore.

“Yeah, like, are you too sick to stand?” clarified Mike. There was that glint of mischief in Mike’s eyes, the same glint that appeared when he successfully tricked the party into falling for a trap in D&D.

“Perfect. Wait right there,” said Mike, springing up from the couch. He bolted towards the cassette deck, and pulled out a mixtape from one of his many pockets.
Will falls violently ill the night of prom, and Mike comes to keep him company because that's all he's ever known how to do.
