Summary
It’s the middle of December 1989, and everyone is finishing up their first semester at college. They’re all returning back to Hawkins for the break, excited for a few weeks of rest, relaxation, and catching up with old friends.
Mike should be excited; he hasn’t spoken to many of his friends since he started college, the losses of the last few years still weighing heavily on his mind. But instead of excitement, his stomach is filled with dread. Dread of being back in his shitty hometown. Dread of all the memories that still haunt each corner of Hawkins.Dread of seeing Will again for the first time in months.

“You’re not gonna forget me,” Mike pressed, heart pounding against his rib cage. His hands twitched, picking nervously at the cardboard. His voice wobbled. “Right?”
Will shook his head quickly, crossing the space between them in a quick jog.
“No,” he whimpered, and his arms hooked around Mike’s waist, face pressing into the crook of his shoulder. “No, Mike. I could never forget you. You won’t-?”
“No,” Mike hissed, dropping his chin down on top of Will’s head. He was starting to catch up to his height, after years of having to look up or down at each other. He tilted his head down, nose squished against Will’s hair. He squeezed his eyes shut, and Will’s arms around him tightened, hands clasped behind his back.
They’d call twice, the first month Will was gone, and then never again.
After four years without contact, Mike chances a visit to the Byers' on his way to college. It changes everything.

Will Byers, 24 and a single father of two, recently moved into Hawkins from sprawling New York, feels like his life is pegged out as miserable. With his ex-wife Jolene leaving him after his second son, Joseph, was born. But once he realizes his next-door neighbor is his old friend, he thinks he might be in for something even worse than miserable.
Mike Wheeler, 24 as an auto mechanic, has owned his late mother’s old home, his childhood home, for four years now, gaining full custody over his younger sister. He thinks his life will be okay after all. With no romantic love required, but when his old childhood friend moves in next door, he feels like he can’t breathe.
Holly Wheeler, 15 and recently losing her mother, feels like she can’t reach out to anybody. And she needs to reach out more than ever. Her feelings for her lifelong best friend has extended into something she doesn’t even know yet. But she’s always been considered a late bloomer when it comes to love. But she just doesn’t know.
Daughter and son of Will Byers, and they ought to inherit his clinginess. After the loss of Jolene, they’re equally saddened.

Jonathan knows how he feels, not necessarily, because he had never been sent to a psychiatric ward. But he knows how it feels to just feel like you are unheard. Will needs this, though. He needs help, as bad as that sounds.
“Yes,” Jonathan replies, taking his eyes off the road to shoot his brother a glare without a hint of real fire, “This could help you, Will, this might—”
“—But I don't want to be helped!” Will interrupts, turning his whole body as much as he could towards his brother, “There's nothing wrong with me!”

Summary
Mike feels like a mistake. He's useless. All he does is cause problems and hurt the people he love's. He's not selfless like Will or brave like El. He's just some ugly nerd but Will loved him for it. Will loved Mike for who he is but he was scared, so he hurt Will and it killed Mike. He returned back into the comfort that El brought him. She was his shield that protected him from the big and evil world that didn't accept people like him or.....Will. Except Will didn't have a shield or anyone to hide him, he was alone. Mike should have been there, he shouldn't be with El but she loves him so he can't leave. He doesn't want to break another persons heart. She needs him and he needs her, or at least he thinks she does. He doesn't know they barley talked since he came to California last year, he barley talked to any of the Byers since then. He wish he did though because maybe if he did everything would have been okay. He didn't though instead he sat by and watched as he ruined peoples life's. He messed up everything.

Will looked at him, his eyes scanning Mike as he thought.
“God, Mike, that’s a pretty fatalistic point of view.”
“Why?” He chuckled. “I mean it, you know, you gotta hit rock bottom to start getting back up for real.”
The past year things had been… weird, in many ways. And apparently for Mike is just going to keep being weird: this time he is doing everything right. After the gates opening in Hawkins the entire town was evacuated, and Mike suddenly found himself living far away from all his friends.
But he keeps in touch, they have a routine. He is doing everything right, but El is the one pushing away now.
And Mike feels lost, away from everything he thought he once understood. Never so alone since it all started.
At least Will and him are talking again.
